i mean personally i dont really care
just dont run around getting locs and cornrows and s**t

Yea I’ve always thought the cornrows and dreadlocks were really bad on other races and is definitely cultural appropriation

i mean that and those styles will literally break off your hair lol

yes
laying your edges/baby hairs is very much a Black people thing and I hate when non-Black people do it

Latina women have styled their edges for just as long but ok
who do you think Latinas got it from?

Weren’t African women and indigenous Caribbean traded off cultures and knowledge when they were both enslaved at a time?

I hope I don’t sound rude hon but weren’t both of these races styling their edges so their hair would seem “professional” back in the 1900s in America
Black Americans styled their edges specifically to look "neat" and "professional," yes
I can't speak for indigenous Carribean people, I don't know of them ever being ostracized for their hair texture and/or styles

Well many of them did originate from Africa and moved to the islands so I would assume their hair was similar but now that I think about it Latin ppl aren’t just from the Caribbean and most of their hair is very different than African people so I can see now what u mean about how styling the edges started from African Americans.

I’m sorry if I sounded insensitive for questioning this. After looking at the pictures u sent to me I don’t think I was even trying to style them like that. But do u think it would be ok for me to put gel or hairspray and slick them upward to my hair so that they don’t stick out in a tight ponytail okay? Or is that still considered styling edges?

Woah I never knew that. Does it only break off on non-African ppl? Or is it the whole procedure of the hairstyles that r so damaging?

-blinks- Er.. I have baby hairs around my face and am Asian/Mediterranean... I've never been called out or even given a second though to slicking them down or otherwise finding a way to keep them contained. Seriously is this an issue?

I was just wondering lol. I’ve never really thought about doing anything with mine but I supposed I’ve been noticing how long they were in comparison to some of my friends with thinner hair.

They get really annoying for me when i take the time to actually do something with my hair and they want to misbehave. As far as other stuff goes... All I feel like I can say on the matter is that hair is a personal thing.

more or less locs, braids, cornrows, etc are styles really only meant for coarse hair
other races' hair is too thin to withstand the process and bc of that the hair breaks off User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

I mean, styling your edges isn't inherently "bad" or even cultural appropriation
if you just want to put product in your hair and brush it to keep it smooth, that's fine
my issue comes when people do intricate swoops and curves like Black women

ultimately you can do what you want (obviously), just continue to be mindful of how people may view you if you wear your hair like those pics exclaim

Lol relatable. The only time I guess I notice them is when I do a tight bun or high ponytail and they’re just there unscathed lmaoo
And I agree with that to an extend tho cuz I think cornrows r just too much and I’ve just learned that it’s damaging to hair that isn’t coarse like African people.

Oh ok I understand now. And thinking back, I’ve have to agree with u on non-African ppl making those wavy styles and they do look bad. The combo of the styled edges and braids tho look so fire so I can see how other races would try and take that.
I don’t have any African friends irl to ask so I really appreciate you answering my question so thank you.

That’s so crazy how ppl r doing these hair styles on them when it’s so obvious that it’s not for them physically. They do look really nice on African ppl tho but every time I see someone with those styles online I cringe. Especially when grown adults do it. Like with kids it’s still bad but maybe they wanted to try it out cuz their friend had the hairstyle and they liked it but still.

It's not damaging if done correctly. The most damaging part of cornrows and similar hairstyles it the tension used when braiding the hair. That's when the damage happens. Just like when you (general) do incredibly tight pony tails forever...the hair will become damaged where the most stress is. My hair is thick and wavy...growing up it came down to my a**...the first time I ever had it cut short was not of my choosing. Right now my hair is about collar bone length. People have always wanted to style my hair and even now with it being as short as it is. If I could handle people playing with my hair without going all goofy about it...I'd have let my hair be styled and learned how to do it myself. Which is a big part of the reason why I say hair is personal.

Idk about that girl lol. Maybe not often, but I think I’ve get a comment on it.

Btw, I love ur avi. It’s so cute and the whole outfit has this pastel but soft look to it??

Defer to the black voices as I am not black, but what I've been told by black folks is this: If you want to take part in a cultural phenomenon (using AAVE, laying edges in the patterns that black women do, wearing braids, etc.) then you NEED to step the ******** up for black people to be able to do the same. Don't go laying your edges and then sit quietly when you see a black woman getting singled out for doing the same thing.

Also be aware that if you do choose to adopt this cultural practice, there will be black folks who still aren't okay with it even if you're doing it respectfully. They have a right to be frustrated when they see someone with privilege wearing their culture when they can't.

Oh I see what u mean now. And wow ur hair sounds so nice. I have pretty thick hair too but yours sounds much more lovelier. I can’t say I’ve ever had it that long since it’s always been cut to medium length. But I understand ur point now.
