Back in MY day, there was no tektek. And no Dream Avatar maker. I remember before even Gaia Avatar Simulator. *Puts on her hipster shades.* cool

Popular Abductee

Tektek was becoming dated / was not keeping up with Gaia's new model of "Constantly release new items to keep people interested".......but I do agree that the Dream Avatar is awful.

Its a shame that Gaia actively went after Tektek to shut it down

I’m going to regret this response.

I actually like the avatar builder. I don’t miss tektek. I found myself relying on it less and less as it was already suffering delays in releases and that gap would have only grown only more had it remained online. I focused on getting acquainted with guides and the global search in Dress Up.
However the tektek creator continued to use hard coded ADs for their own passion project as a competitor to gaia and instead of switching it out to random ADs, and they decided to nuke the whole site after getting the C&D. Like Nintendo fan projects, a lot of creators do choose to withdrawal a project *before* actual legal intervention is taken. C&D is, to oversimplify, that legal action can/will be taken. Gaia knew of Tektek and let it continue for years, but goodwill only extends so far.

You have every permission to miss the old avatar creator, sure. I just don’t.

The current builder could use some love, but that’s a site feedback topic. I’d be truly interested in some straight up suggestions on its presentation getting a face lift.

as a girl obsessed with character creators and dressup games, the only reason i joined gaia in the first place (well, for the long-term anyway) was because tektek was closing. then i realized how far behind tektek was with being up-to-date on item releases. i did enjoy the custom layering options it had, though.

truthfully i don't even use the avi builder unless i'm ghosting someone else's inventory to make an avi for them. that's about the only feature it has that i prefer over just using the dressup/equip page and the search function. i just find the layout of the avi builder to be kinda cumbersome, and, more often than not, if i stay on the page for a long time, i just straight-up lose my progress. that's why i appreciate the equip page saving where you left off if you leave the page, even if you're using items you don't have.

i know they didn't have to make it, and i'm glad they at least tried to offer a substitution for something a lot of people miss, but it has potential to be way better.

Like I said in an earlier post. I totally get the legality of situation and side with Gaia on that end. My problem is it's bugs. I can get almost a whole outfit out of it, until i get to one item that isn't "compatible" with the others, and removes all the previous items equipped to the avatar disappear. That in the lack of layering.

I wouldn't even mind the poor organization and search tool, if those other two problems would be addressed.

I used to use tektek, like, religiously... and I had no idea they shut it down until I came back a couple days ago ! Was it really copyright issues? (Because like, a third of all of Gaia's items are bootlegs lmao)

Gaia let Tektek do it for years, until the creator of Tektek, started promoting his own Avatar Builder on the Tektek site.

So it wasn't that they were using Gaia items and avatar to make your own character, but that he was promoting a third party company.

Basically he was using Gaia items and likeness, to make money without permission from Gaia.

Not really a s**t post. This does have to deal with the community. It's not some random topic that has nothing to do with Gaia. So you're wrong on which forum this belongs in.

i mean this thread is several years too late, tbh. But yeah i never use the avi builder. the feature i miss most from tektek is the list of inventory items and how much they're worth. i think a lot more people would actually sell some of their junk if they knew it was worth a couple hundred plat

He was kind of an ahole and took months to update new items/RIGs as time went on. The only thing I did there was use the how much gold is my inventory worth feature.

The avi maker is OK, there are definitely some things I'd change. Mostly I use it for making contest avi's.

Gaia sure does a good job burning people who try to make useful tools for users.

That was the only reason I'd go there. I never used it otherwise, same with the current one. I can preview items in the MP. Good enough for me.

I remember people telling me I was insane for buying bunny slippers for 50k gold back in the day, which, at the time, was the highest anyone had ever paid for them.
