It has been directly stated by those involved in the making of this and the show's predecessor that the show draws from a diverse number of cultures, mainly those of Asia. To prove this point I'll throw some quotes at you so you can't deny the truth of the matter.

"This is an ancient, fantastical Asian environment, primarily Chinese.”
- The A:TLA IP Bible

"The show was heavily influenced by Asian culture, some of the characters were even modeled after Asian members of the crew."
-Dao Le, Animatic Editor for Avatar: The Last Airbender

"[Avatar: The Last Airbender is] beautifully executed, a stunning masterpiece of animated storytelling that harmonizes Western influences with aesthetic inspiration drawn from a diverse array of cultures, including those of China, Japan, India, and the Inuit."
-Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Art of the Animated Series

Everyone is free to interpret the racial ethnicity of the characters in the show as they please, but since it has been expressed by those involved in the making of show the basis and origin of the characters. It would be the most correct to say the characters in the show would be of Asian or Inuit descent. Thus, personally I will agree with poster amor omnibus idem that Korra would be Inuit.

TL;DR Characters from the show are based off Asian or Inuit cultures! So Korra and other water benders are probably based off the Inuit.
I love you for postin this!
Id think shes more Native American skin toned... not black. neutral

Amorous Millionaire

She is Inuit (Eskimo) >.< stressed
Waterbender Korra
What the ********? neutral If we going by American terms she would be considered black. Why are people scared of that? Someone went as far as saying that black people can't be eskimos.

I think she's chinese or japanese.
KORRA IS NOT BLACK.
korra is an eskimo. eskimos are neither black nor white. actually they look like asians.

Okay, even though I agree that she's definitely Inuit, whatever race she is doesn't really matter. It's annoying how people favor others just based on their ethnicity. It's not right.

Media representation for minorities IS important though. It's a rather reliable marker for social equality issues, actually. So...it DOES matter that we have an action hero who is a woman of color in a childrens cartoon. That's fairly rare, and pretty ******** awesome.

it is ******** awesome indeed.

Hm.. I always thought she'd be considered Native American or Native Alaskan. Not that it matters either way to me, she's still awesome no matter what. :3
Korra I think we can safely assume isn't Indian. And by American standards she would be black based on looks.

She doesn't look Black to me. She actually does look more Native Alaskan to me than Black. Her facial features don't look Black at all, in my opinion. Just because she has darker skin doesn't mean she's Black.

But like I said, it doesn't really matter what her race is. And really.. she's not Black or Native American or anything like that. She's Water Tribe.
I highly doubt that the races in the Avatar world are the same as the ones in the real world.

" Her facial features don't look Black at all"
I probably shouldn't say anything on this, but I will since I'm an ethnic studies major, but a lot of you guys just trying to prove that she isn't black, but Inuit/Native are doing it in a very racist sounding way....Blacks/African-American/West Indians/Africans, don't have 1 set of facial features.

Blacks-meaning people of African descent who don't identify as African American, West Indian or African, look different and have different features than those we categorize as black.

This is a black Moroccan and ethiopian women, meaning they're from Africa and black:

These are African American women, meaning they're from America and black:

These are West Indian women, meaning they're black Carribeans:

My problem with you guys saying they don't look black, is that you're probably falling into the stereotype that all black women are fat, big lips, big noses, without realizing that being black is different everywhere, and not all black women need perms for straight hair as one user said.

Though I do agree that Korra is Inuit like the producers said, not all black people look alike or have stereotyped features.

Oh no, no, no! I'm not trying to stereotype blacks at all! And I MOST CERTAINLY don't think all black women are fat with big lips, noses, etc.
I mean, you can say the same with pretty much all races. None really look 100% alike and I understand that completely!
Never the less, she still doesn't look black to me, and not because I'd expect her to look like a stereotypical black women. She just looks to be a different race, most likely Inuit, Native Alaskan, Native America, or something of that sort.

However, it definitely wouldn't bother me if she were black. It also wouldn't bother me if she were Hispanic, Asian, or any other kind of race under the sun. Korra is Korra and she is awesome.

Fluffy Creature

The southern watertribe are based on the Inuit. But I don't care what she is, she's awesome. She's an attractive, well-written, entertaining, and badass character with depth: who cares what ethnicity she supposedly looks like? It's like people look for things to complain about or get offended by.

I firmly believe that in fanart people should get her skintone correctly, instead of making her too light or too dark, but that's about as big a stink about this matter I'm going to make.
lolwut?
The different nations all had roots in specific real-world peoples. Fire Nation was Japan, Earth Kingdom was China, the Water Tribes were Eskimo, and the Air Nomads were Tibetan.

But moreover, who cares. So she's not white. Neither was Katara, but I never heard people complain about her complexion. neutral
She isn't black at all.
She's from a TRIBE
and looks more native American or something around there than black.

Floppy Gawker

Korra isn't black. If you look at her in ANY episode, she is slightly darker than Mako. She was created to have the same skin as Katara and Sokka and THEY are also NOT black. They are Inuit. Also, I have read that they have not had one African character in Avatar (AND that all the characters have either black or brown hair. Excluding the elderly). But really, guys... It's skin. Think about it. Does it really ******** matter what a cartoon's race is? God, I wish the Avatar was real and rid the world of morons. UGH!!

Old news is old.
People are mad when ever any character isn't as white as white bread.
The reason none of you can come to an agreeable conclusion is because there is no real world answer for this fantasy world question.

It's a cartoon, not a live action.

It may be based off the real world but ultimately it is a fantasy world.

Korra has dark skin, light blue eyes, and brown hair. Typical Water Tribe combo.

Mako has light skin, yellow eyes, and black hair. Typical Fire Nation combo.

etc, etc.

Now, if you can find a group of people IN REAL LIFE, that all share the water tribe (They ALL have dark skin, blue eyes, dark/brown hair) or fire nation characteristics (Yellow eyes, black hair, light skin), then okay, you may apply it to real life.

Can't?

Oh, I wonder why.
