I actually write so they are full fledged characters not based on any particular Canon character but they are played within the universe of a particular story. We've also made our own stories that aren't tied to anything else and I've written a lot of my own original stuff.

i have a few ocs myself, and i agree with them needing to be full fledged characters.
i'm not personally very fond of fancharacters, considering most of them are rainbow flavoured recolours..... to each their own i suppose.
it makes me sad to see ocs that are excessively flat. :C
and mary-sues.
not meaning to be prejudiced or trying to stereotype or anything, but oh god.

Interesting OCs I have come across thus far ("-" my comments.):

1. Girl who's eye color changes according to her mood.
-best part was when her eye's turned pink or something and the dude said, "...AND WHATS WITH THAT FREAKISH EYE COLOR THING1?"

2. Girl who suddenly remembers her past or something, becomes motionless and starts reciting/singing Evanescence.

I'm fully aware sonic is from japan an all, I was merely listing categories off the top of my head...
Maybe to you altered characters are " original" but to me it's far from it. You have no originality if you had to steal, yes steal, someones piece and make it your own. Which is what half the otaku kids do now a days. It's harmless I suppose but when they are to seriously think the creation of this character was all their imagination and no one elses ( the original creator of whatever they altered) well they are mistaken and fooled.

That's my thoughts, I just find it irritating being someone who puts the effort into creating and manually drawing characters.
