• There was once a time
    Very long ago
    When I was very young
    there was once a time
    not so long ago
    before this song was sung

    It was summer then
    In the pouring rain
    the lightning flashed all night
    It was autumn then
    And the wind did howl
My dreams were filled with fright

    So I could not sleep
    not a wink could I
    I hid beneath the sheets
    And I could not dream
    Any peaceful dreams
    I sailed on nightmare fleets

    Through wicked oceans
    of a Faerie realm
    Of myth and fantasy
    and though beautiful
    it sickened my soul
    For stood a lonely tree

    The mast of my ship
    All it's branches bare
    And upon that tree hung
    All those whom I love
    in their finest clothes
their deaths I knew I'd brung

    Every night I lay
    In my room alone
    hating every second
    it was ten past two
    when I felt the voice
    of dread as she beckoned

    So I rose from bed
    And I grabbed my knife
    my movements were not mine
    With red savage cuts
    My left arm I scribed
    words to destroy time

    But one night in spring
    I was not alone
    my dreams were not ghostly
    I lay there in love
    And I did not move
    save to hold her closely

    Since then I have grown
    For to be so brave
    that even when alone
    I can sleep at night
    Without fear or doubt
That I should not come home

    Some of you may know
    what it's like to be
    Afraid of your own rage
    So I say to you
    Be true to yourself
for all the world's a stage
