• Running, I could not stop,
Running I won’t let him catch up.

Thus was that first night of April
The most horrific night of my life
    When that man chased me
Just when the clock striked ten.

    Running, I won’t stop
Running, I won’t let him catch up.

    I was running fast
    And he was keeping up
For of course, I was just a girl
    He was asking to marry.
“Marry me,” he said, as he reached his pocket
For the ring he was going to offer me
As a symbol of his love.
But I did not love him back.
    So he clutched my hand,
    His eyes filled with fear.
    And I screamed.

    Running, I could not stop
Running, I won’t let him catch up.

I climbed the fence, but he caught my foot,
“But Rose, he said, “You know I love you!”
I shook my foot free, and fell on the other side
    Of the high fence.

    Running, I could not stop,
Running, I won’t let him catch up.

    I looked behind my back
    And concluded he was far.
So I found refuge, under an oak tree.
    I looked at my hands,
    My bleeding hands.
Why did he have to choose me?

    “Rose!” I heard him sceam.
Yes, It’s true, he caught up with me.
He held my wrists; he was holding a knife
And I was holding a scream of fright.
“Rose, I love you.” I heard him say.
    “Idiot! You’re my brother!”
    And I ran away.

“April fools!” I heard him scream.
    And I stopped and screamed
“You know that was mean!” scream
