• Behind the rubble, clothes dishevelled,
A quick look back, the city’s levelled,
Bombs from the sky, the airborne devils.
    How did I survive?

    A blackened corpse over there,
    Burning flesh in the air,
    I wander blindly, unaware.
    How come I’m alive?

With one step forward my foot gives a crunch,
The remains of a family out for lunch,
I knew them quite well, a kind-hearted bunch.
    Why did I not die?

I stumble upon the ruins of my home,
All that’s left now is ashes and bone,
I stand in the wreckage, alive but alone.
    Why, for God’s sake, why?
