• When Tom went away,
The last thing I heard him say,
Was ‘ I love you my dear’,
As he stepped forwards without fear.

    A lump in my throat,
    As he boarded the boat,
    And tears in my eyes,
    As we waved our goodbyes.

    Soon I received a note,
    Sent over seas by boat,
    It read 'my dear Sue,
    Remember our love is true.'

    Then arrived a telegram,
Sent to me by Privet Sam,
It said that Tom had been shot,
    Survival chances weren’t a lot.

    So they sent him home,
Over that murky sea of foam,
When they brought him to the door,
I fainted away to the cold hard floor.

    He had lost an arm,
Where the shot had caused him harm,
    Even missing an eye,
didn’t stop him from being a great guy.
    I stayed by his side,
Though the pain he had to hide to hide,
    And when he passed away,
I didn’t know what to say.

Though I tried not to moan,
    I felt so alone,
Now I only look forward to dying,
At least then I’d be up high in,

The place where my dear Tom is.
