• INT. FUNERAL HOME. MORNING. ONE WEEK LATER.

We see Phoenix sitting in the lobby, still in shock that
Trish died. A family member walks up to him.

    FAMILY MEMBER
You’re not going to see her?

    (Beat)

    FAMILY MEMBER (CNT’D)
    Kierra and Xavier are in
    there...devastated. They need you
right now. Especially at a time
    like this.

    PHOENIX
If they needed me they would be out
    here...no one’s asking how I’m
doing...no one. I’m the one that
has to stay strong when tragedy
    happens.

    FAMILY MEMBER
    It’s not about you.

    PHOENIX
Who is it about then? My mom?
    Reality check; she’s dead. She’s
gone. I don’t think its about her
    anymore.

    Pause.

    FAMILY MEMBER
It’s HER funeral though. I just
    think it’s best if you-

    PHOENIX
I don’t care what you think. At
all...just go away. Leave me alone.

    Long pause.

    FAMILY MEMBER
Go and see her...this is the final
    time you will get to...

    He walks away.

Family and friends are sitting, and mourning over Trish. The
open casket revealed her beautiful face, her nice long hair.
Kierra and her cousin, SARAH, 18, are kneeling next to the
casket. Kierra is looking at Trish’s body, as Sarah is
comforting her. Kierra then starts to break down.

    KIERRA
    (sobbing)
    Mom...please, wake up...please wake
    up!

She sobs even more. Sarah slowly gets up and grabs Kierra’s
    hand.

    SARAH
Come on, we have to go...

    KIERRA
    Mom, please just open your
    eyes...please! Just wake up!

    SARAH
    (gently pulling Kierra)
Come on, Kierra, let’s go sit down,
    come on.

Kierra, sobbing cooperates and goes with Sarah to sit down,
as she cries even harder. Trish’s brother, MITCHEL, aged 40
is looking at the casket, with tears rolling down his
cheeks. Other mourners come and pay their respect next to
    her.

Damon sits by Xavier and pats his shoulder. Xavier is
looking down and he shakes his head.

    XAVIER
    Dad...I can’t believe she’s gone.

    DAMON
    (fighting back tears)
    I know, son...I know. I can’t
    either.

They both look at the casket together.

    DAMON (CNT’D)
    She’s with her sister now...they’re
both watching us no matter what.

    XAVIER
I guess if that’s how you want to
look at it...I’ll never see her
    smile again...her laugh...

    CONTINUED: 27.

He catches himself about to cry, then fights back his tears.

    XAVIER (CNT’D)
It’s just not fair...what did mom
    do to deserve this?

    DAMON
    Well, Xavier...no one knows what
death is like. Everyone asks the
question "Where do we go?" Or "We
go to heaven or we go to hell."
    Truth is, we don’t know.

    (Beat)

    DAMON (CNT’D)
Best way that I can put it
    is...she’s resting now. That’s all
    she needed.

    XAVIER
    No. You’re wrong. Everytime we
    called her she talked about
    me...Kierra...Phoenix...we were
what she needed. WE needed HER. And
    now...she’s gone. She’s gone.

    Pause.

    DAMON
She’s alive in our hearts...if you
can’t see it that way, then it’ll
be twice as hard to move on.

    (beat)

Mitchel breaks out in tears and hurries out the funeral
room. Damon watches and follows him outside.

EXT. IN FRONT OF FUNERAL HOME. DAY.

Mitchel is in tears, staring out to the cemetery across from
the funeral home. Damon comes out and watches him for a few
    seconds. He then approaches him.

    DAMON
    Mitchel...are you okay?

    MITCHEL
I’m gonna have to be. What choice
    do I have?

    (Beat)

    CONTINUED: 28.

    MITCHEL (CNT’D)
You got an extra smoke by any
    chance?

    DAMON
    Yeah.

Damon hands Mitchel a cigarette. He lights it and takes a
    large pull.

    DAMON (CNT’D)
    I thought you quit.

Mitchel chuckles. He shakes his head and takes another pull.

    MITCHEL
I feel so numb right now...I’m not
sure how else to handle what I
    feel. It’s as if I don’t care
    anymore.

    DAMON
It’s hard on all of us...for me, my
kids, and I’m sure Sarah feels the
    same way...but I can’t imagine how
    you’re feeling. Losing your
    wife...your parents. Your sister,
    Tina...now the only sibling you
have left is gone...I’m so sorry.

    MITCHEL
Sarah is all I have left now. Yes,
    we’ve experienced a lot of
    funerals...but I’m sure losing my
sister is hurting me no more than
it’s hurting you or anyone else.
    Trish was your wife...

    Pause.

    MITCHEL (CNT’D)
    She was...so outgoing. She was
    always the person to understand
    both sides of every story...which
made me and her so close. The
minute I found out she was released
    from the hospital...I finally
thought life was finally giving me
a break. From the pain I felt from
Tina dying, the pain I felt from my
wife Natalie passing not even two
    years ago.

Beat. Mitchel almost cries, but takes another pull.

    MITCHEL (CNT’D)
    Now...life is just cruel. Taking
    Trish away from us...having my
niece and nephews in so much
    pain...Christ, I question why I’m
    still standing sometimes...Just one
death after another and somehow I’m
    still here.

    DAMON
    Mitchel, you gotta understand that
you’re here for a reason, and
    that’s Sarah. Life isn’t fair.
    Unfortunately we all learned that
the hard way. Stay strong for her,
    and yourself. That’s important,
that’s exactly what I’m doing with
my kids. Trish would want that.

    MITCHEL
    Yeah...she would.

    DAMON
Remember you can come over any time
you want. If you need anything at
all, let me know. We can get
together more often; go out to
    dinner all together or anything.
    Just let me know.

    MITCHEL
    Okay...thanks man, I really
    appreciate it.

    They hug each other.

Sarah comes out and approaches them.

    SARAH
    Dad, Damon? They’re ready...

    DAMON
    Alright...how are you
    doing, Sarah?

    SARAH
    I’m...

She suddenly starts to cry. Damon hugs her tight and
    comforts her.

    DAMON
    (tearing)
    It’s okay.

    MITCHEL
    Come here, honey.

Sarah hugs Mitchel tight as they both cry softly, embracing
    each other.

    FADE OUT:

    BURIAL SITE. CEMETERY. DAY.

Everyone is throwing flowers onto the casket, as a final
goodbye. Friends and family are still crying/mourning.

The priest starts saying prayer, right before they start
lowering the casket. Clip of everyone watching. Damon,
Mitchel, Kierra, Xavier and Sarah are in front, looking down
at the casket in front of them. Phoenix is all the way in
    the back, still in shock.

They begin lowering Trish’s casket into the ground as the
priest ends his prayer. Clip of Damon crying, as he’s
realizing this is final farewell to his beloved wife.

Phoenix hears the casket being lowered and suddenly pushes
through everyone to the front. Damon sees him and holds him
    as Phoenix starts to cry.

    PHOENIX
    (crying)
    Mom...mom...

Phoenix falls to his knees and punches the ground, crying
and watches as the casket lowers to the ground.

    INT. DAMON’S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

Damon is lying on the bed, having trouble sleeping. He
starts seeing flashes of Trish in a park, smiling, looking
at him. He moans and turns over. He has flashes of the
hospital. He sees Trish in the surgery room, and hears the
    heart monitor go flat.

Damon wakes up and takes rapid breaths. He turns to the side
and sees a photo of him and Trish getting married.

    31.

INT. LIVING ROOM. DAY. 3 MONTHS LATER.

Kierra is sitting on the couch, playing a game on her phone.
Phoenix comes in the living room and starts searching
    everywhere.

    KIERRA
    (watching him search)
    What’re you looking for?

    PHOENIX
    (searching)
    I left my ID somewhere. I can’t
    find it anywhere.

    KIERRA
Do you want me to help?

    PHOENIX
    No.

As he’s searching more, he gets more frustrated that he
can’t find it. He searches in a drawer,
and out of frustration, he slams the drawer shut and few
pictures from the end table by the TV fall.

    KIERRA
    (getting up)
    Phoenix!!

She hurries to the picture and Phoenix notices he had broke
a picture of Trish. Kierra gathers up the glass pieces, then
looks at him. With the look on his face, he realizes what he
    did and feels guilty.

    KIERRA (CNT’D)
    What’s the matter with you?

    PHOENIX
    (quietly)
    Nothing...nothing.

As he heads for the door, grabbing his keys, Kierra steps in
front of him, keeping him from leaving.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
Get out of my way, Kierra.

    KIERRA
    No.

    PHOENIX
    Kierra...get out...of my
    way...right now.

    PHOENIX

    count of three...

    KIERRA
What? What are you going to do?
    Huh?

    (Beat)

    KIERRA (CNT’D)
Why don’t you just push me to the
side and walk? You know you could
if you really wanted to! Do it.

    Pause

    PHOENIX
    Don’t ******** test me.

    KIERRA
    Exactly. I knew it.

    PHOENIX
You’re asking for it, kid. Better
you just leave me alone before I
    give you a reason to.

    KIERRA
You’re not the same. I’m worried
    about you...ever since mom died-

    PHOENIX
    (interuppting)
Do you think any of us are the
    ******** same with her gone? I don’t
even know why you or Xavier or
anyone act like you care to begin
    with.

    KIERRA
To be very honest...I can’t speak
for Dad or Xavier, but me? I KNOW
I care about you. You’re my older
    brother, how could I not?

    (Beat)

    KIERRA (CNT’D)
You were the guy that protected me
every time someone made me cry. The
older brother that let me have the
last swing when the other kids were
on it. The older brother who always
gave me the bigger half of his
    dessert...

    (Beat)

    KIERRA (CNT’D)
Is there any more of that in your
    heart left? Anywhere?

    Short pause

    KIERRA (CNT’D)
What would mom think if she were
    here?

    PHOENIX
Keep her out of this. And i swear
to God the next time you bring her
up just to make me open up, you’ll
    wish--

Phoenix is interrupted by a noise by the stairs. Phoenix and
Kierra turn to see Damon, by the kitchen, looking at them
both. Short pause. Damon looks away and goes into the
kitchen. We hear the coffee machine getting ready. Phoenix
    looks at Kierra.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
I’m going to ask you one more time
to get out of my way.

    (Beat)

    KIERRA
    You never asked.

Kierra steps to the side. Phoenix looks at Kierra for a few
seconds, then leaves, slamming the door behind him. Kierra
sits back on the couch and stares at the wall, in deep
    thought.

Xavier comes downstairs and sees how upset Kierra is. He
    sits down next to her.

    XAVIER
What was all of that yelling?

    Our favorite brother in the
    world...

    XAVIER
    (chuckles)
    That’s our brother...what can ya
    do?

    KIERRA
I’m worried about him. I really am.

    XAVIER
    Why?

    KIERRA
At mom’s funeral, he broke down.
    That’s getting to me.

    XAVIER
Everyone broke down at the funeral,
    Kierra.

    KIERRA
    Remember when Phoenix broke his
rib? After mom died? It punctured
    his lung...he didn’t shed a
tear...not a one. But he literally
broke down at the funeral. I wasn’t
    even expecting that from him.

    XAVIER
I don’t think anyone was. Injuries
    like that are replaceable, Kierra.
Mom will never be replaceable. It
was probably just setting in on him
at the time. It feels surreal.

    KIERRA
    Exactly...if it’s breaking his
    heart this badly...I’m afraid
    that...

    XAVIER
    (getting what Kierra is trying
    to say)
No, Kierra don’t think like that,
please. It’s hard on all of us, but
he will be okay. We know him than
    anyone. I mean ANYONE.

    KIERRA
    Do we?

    Pause.

    XAVIER
As much as he’s opened up...

    KIERRA
    Yeah...somehow I feel like I barley
know him. I just want him to be
    okay.

    XAVIER
    (Puts his hand on Kierra’s
    shoulder)
    Remember what mom always said?
    Everytime we were always...stuck on
something? or when we were going
    through our heartbreaks?

    KIERRA
Yeah...live life at your own pace.

    XAVIER
Exactly. Phoenix will open up to us
when he’s ready. Right now he’s
just...well you know how he is.

    KIERRA
    Yeah...you’re right. Thankyou.

    XAVIER
    (smiles)
We’ll all be okay. Mom’s with us
right now and she’s proud of how
    strong we’re being.

    (Beat)

    KIERRA
    (smiling)
    Right.

    XAVIER
I was actually about to go see her.
Sarah and Mitchel are suppossed to
meet me there. Then we’re coming
back here. You wanna tag along?

    KIERRA
Yes, of course! Let me get my
    stuff.

    36.

Kierra gets up, and Xavier watches as she goes upstairs.

    EXT. CEMETERY. DAY.

Xavier and Kierra walk up to Trish’s grave. Kierra sets a
    dozen roses and a stuffed animal of Trish’s favorite animal;
a leopard. Kierra and Xavier look at the grave stone.

"Beloved Mother and Sister. Trisha M. Hartman. March 29th,
    1971-March 29th, 2013."

Xavier and Kierra hug each other, looking at the gravestone.
    Kierra sheds a few tears.

    KIERRA
    I miss her so much.

    XAVIER
    (holding her closer)
    Me too, Kierra. Me too.

    (Beat)

    XAVIER (CNT’D)
Things will never be the same
    without her...

About a minute later, Sarah comes up to them. Xavier and
Kierra hug her both and Sarah turns to Trish’s grave.

    SARAH
    Life’s so crazy...you’re here one
    day then gone the next.

    XAVIER
I know. It doesn’t even feel real
    sometimes.

    SARAH
    She left too soon.

Sarah goes up to the gravestone and rests one hand on it.
She looks at Xavier and Kierra.

    SARAH (CNT’D)
You don’t see that happen very
    often...

to making her special day worth it.

    SARAH
    (looks back at the gravestone)
I miss you a lot Auntie Trish.

    XAVIER
She missed you too. She was talking
about you when we were having our
    last dinner together.

    SARAH
My dad was doing the same. It
    hasn’t really hit him yet.

    XAVIER
    How do you know that?

Sarah turns her head to her aunt Tina’s grave. Sarah slowly
walks over to it and looks down. She kisses the gravestone
lightly and wipes a tear from her face.

    SARAH
He only acted like this twice. When
my mom died...and when our aunt
    Tina died.

Xavier walks beside Sarah and looks at Tina’s grave with
    her.

    XAVIER
    They’re both together now.
    Maybe...aunt Tina was just feeling
    lonley...waiting on the other side
    for Trish. Maybe...my mom couldn’t
    have handled seeing Mitchel go.

    SARAH
There’s too many maybe’s in that
    sentence.

She sighs and looks back at the car Mitchel is in, right by
    the curb.

But he took me here because he knew
how much it would mean to me.

    KIERRA
    Atleast he still has you.

    SARAH
    (smiles and giggles)
    Yeah...you’re definatley right
    about that.

    XAVIER
You’re coming back to our house,
    right?

    SARAH
Yep. My dad wanted to go to the
store with Damon. Is Phoenix home?

Pause. Xavier and Kierra look at each other.

    KIERRA
He had something to do. Hopefully
    he’ll be home by tonight.

    SARAH
Alright. I haven’t seen him since
the funeral. I just wanted to see
    how he was doing.

    KIERRA
He’s fine. He’ll be okay, you know
    how he is.

    XAVIER
    (chuckles)
    Don’t we all?

    SARAH
    Alright, are you guys ready?

    XAVIER
    Yep, let’s go.

    39.

As they head out, Kierra suddenly sees something that
catches her eye. She sees a man wobbling through the
graveyard from a far distance. The man turns to her and
slowly starts walking after her. Kierra goes to the car, a
little scared and they drive away.

    EXT. BACKYARD. NIGHT.

Kierra and Sarah are sitting on lawn chairs with a wine
    cooler in their hands.

    SARAH
I was hoping my dad went to the
    liquor store today!

    KIERRA
    I know. I need a little buzz.

    They both laugh.

    KIERRA (CNT’D)
It’s really nice having you and
Mitchel over a lot more often.
We’re all at peace when we have
    each other.

    SARAH
Of course, you’re my cousin. I
think family is all we really need.

They tap each others bottles together and take a sip.

    KIERRA
    Cheers to that.

    INT. LIVING ROOM.

Damon and Mitchel are watching a racing show, while having a
    few beers.

    DAMON
Oh, man. I need to be on one of
    these shows!

    Don’t remind me, please!

    DAMON
But I kicked those guys asses,
    didn’t I? I won!

    MITCHEL
You had me, Natalie and Trish going
    crazy in the car!

    DAMON
Exactly! I show no mercy, I would
definatley just ram into one of
those cars and have them flip like
    a dozen times.

    MITCHEL
    That’s you, though!

    DAMON
Yeah. How have you been holding up
    though?

    MITCHEL
I’ve been okay. To be honest I’m
grateful that we still have each
other. I’m grateful I have Sarah,
    my badass niece and nephews.

    DAMON
I feel the same way. No matter what
    happens, we’ll always have each
    other.

    MITCHEL
You said it. Where’s Xavier? What
does he usually do when he’s
    upstairs all night?

    41.

We see Xavier playing a video game in the dark, very into
it. He loses, and throws the controller to the wall,
    frustrated.

    EXT. WOODS. NIGHT.

Phoenix is hanging out with three of his friends, JUNO, 29,
MARCUS, 31, and CRAIG, 30. Phoenix was the youngest out of
his friends. They’re passing a blunt around. There’s
    coughing and conversation going.

Phoenix takes a big hit and starts coughing loudly, and he
    spits out saliva.

    MARCUS
Damn, shut up Phoenix! Stop taking
it like a little b***h before you
    get us caught.

    PHOENIX
I’m sure you’re used to saying that

    JUNO
    Damn I’m ******** blazed.

    CRAIG

    JUNO
    Um, hell no.

    MARCUS

    JUNO

Craig, Phoenix and Juno start laughing loudly as Marcus

    JUNO
Hey, relax man, we’re just having
    fun.

    MARCUS
Yeah, you guys are ******** clowns.

    CRAIG

This is some good s**t. Where do
    you get it, Phoenix?

    PHOENIX
I have my ways. You know me I don’t

Remember the weed that Marcus’ ex

    JUNO
You mean the weed I smoked when I
passed my drug test the next day?

    MARCUS
Hey, I didn’t like it either. Why
do you think I dumped her? She was
    such a slut anyway. I don’t know
why you guys didn’t say anything
    earlier.

    CRAIG
Well, we did try telling you
    Marcus. We did.

    MARCUS
Yeah, I guess you’re right. But
    your sister, Phoenix? Damn the
    things I would do.

Phoenix’s attitude quickly changes and he slowly walks up to
    him.

    PHOENIX
What did you say about my sister?

    MARCUS
Oh, come on dude, she’s hot! Let me
tap that just once and I swear I’ll
smoke you out for a week.

    PHOENIX
Shut up, Marcus. Shut up before I
punch you in the ******** teeth, I
    swear.

    CRAIG
    Seriously Marcus, just shut up.
    You’re ******** 32 she’s young as
    hell.

    JUNO
    Don’t get him heated.

    MARCUS
What? Even you guys said her body
    was-

Phoenix pushes Marcus and he stunbles back. Marcus looks at
him and is about to hit him back, but they hear a moan in
    the trees.

    JUNO
    What the hell was that?

    CRAIG
    Where did it come from?

    PHOENIX
    I don’t know.

    They hear it again.

    CRAIG
    It’s coming from the cemetery.

    JUNO
What the hell is someone doing
    there?

    MARCUS
Umm that’s what people usually do.
Hey Juno, why don’t you go check it
    out?

    CRAIG
    Shut up, Marcus.

    PHOENIX
That’s just too creepy. Come on
guys, do you just want to smoke
    somewhere else?

    MARCUS
    (laughing)
Hey Phoenix, why don’t you check it
out? Who knows? What if it’s your
    mom?

Phoenix glares at Marcus then tackles him to the ground and
starts punching his face. Juno and Craig struggle to Phoenix
    off of him.

    PHOENIX
I swear to God, Marcus I’m going to
    ******** kill you one day!

    MARCUS
******** you! Just get the hell out of
    here!

    PHOENIX

I’ll be down there eating your mom
out you son of a b***h.

    PHOENIX
    YOU ******** p***k!!!

He runs to him, but Craig and Juno hold him back. They’re
all cursing and yelling and Craig manages to pull Phoenix
    back.

    CRAIG

    He’s a ******** idiot!

    stare.

    PHOENIX
If I ever find you on the
    street...ANYWHERE...I’m bashing
your ******** skull in. I promise.

Phoenix looks at Juno and Craig, and leaves. They hear him
get into his car and leave.

    JUNO
Marcus you never know when you’ve
    taken it too far.

    MARCUS
    Whatever, bro. He’s just hurt
that’s it. He used to take every
joke now he’s all up tight like a
    ******** girl. I don’t need that

    (Beat)

    CRAIG
    Marcus...you’re smoking me out
    tomorrow.

    MARCUS
    Why?

    CRAIG
    Because you’re stupidity killed my
    high. Nice ******** going.

    INT. CAR. NIGHT.

Phoenix is in the car, smoking a cigarette, really mad about
what just happened. He turns on the radio and listens to
metal music. He goes to his phone and sees that Kierra
texted him. The text says "Miss and love you!". Phoenix
looks at it and smiles. Suddenly SLAM!

He hit something really hard; as if he hit a deer.

    PHOENIX
    s**t!!

He gets out the car and sees someone lying unconciously.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
    Holy ********...

Phoenix looks ahead and sees a cop car with his sirens on,
probably on his way to another emergency.

Phoenix kneels down next to the person he hit. There’s blood
on the street and teeth are scattered out on the floor.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
    Sir? Sir? Are you ok??

    No reply.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
    ********!

Phoenix stands up and walks in circles, not knowing what to
do. He then quickly goes into his car and dials Kierra’s
    number. He calls her.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
    (into phone)
Kierra. I need you to hear me out.

    (Beat)

    He starts driving away.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
    (into phone)
    I don’t know what to do, I’m 0.5
    seconds away from flipping out
    right now.

    (Beat)

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
    (into phone)
    I...hit someone with my ********
    car!
    (into phone)
    He’s not answering me or
    anything...I don’t know.
    (he listens)
I can’t call the damn cops! Are you
    kidding me?
    (he listens)
    I left already!
    (he listens)
What? Go back? Are you kidding me??

Phoenix hangs up and turns the car around. He drives back.
He goes to the same spot he hit the person with, but he
doesnt see his body there anymore.

    PHOENIX (CNT’D)
    Holy s**t...

He looks around once more. He gets into his car, turns the
    headlights on and drives away.
