• Her head rested lightly on the pillow; brown eyes staring off into the blackness of the room. She was staring at nothing and everything. From just her eyes, you could tell her mind was heavy, that there was a vine of confusion, pain that was wrapping around her. She was lost like the stars in the midnight sky. Lost to herself.

A heavy sigh escaped her pale lips as she finally closed her eyes. With her arms wrapped tightly around a separate pillow, she scrunched her body closer together, making herself as small as possible. It was as if she was trying to hide herself, make herself invisible to some unseen eyes. Like a dog cowering away from a raised hand, she shrunk.

There was a creaking sound that came from the dark room. The steady, low thump of foot steps. Heavy steps. A shadow emerged from the hollow black of the room and stopped at the end of her bed. She didn’t seem to notice, or perhaps she had noticed but ignored the presence.

The room was quiet. There was the soft hum from ceiling fan, but other than that there was silence.

“You should be sleeping,” the voice was low, soft, sweet, thick like honey. The shadow, it, he, had spoken.

She stayed on the bed, eyes closed. A yawn played across her face as she turned her head to address the shadow. Eyes opening to a slit of brown, she stared at the black mass for a heartbeat then smiled. It was nothing but a mere twitch of lips. “I am truly trying to sleep. Promise.”

The shadow moved and sat on the end of the bed, head hanging. “Your lying is almost as bad as your motivation these days.”

“Mm, is that so?” She moved her head back and curled her body more securely around the poor pillow. “What. A. Pity.”

“Yes, that is so. It is a pity. These are the years you’re suppose to love, enjoy being alive and all you do…” his voice trailed off leaving her to fill in the blanks however she pleased. Her smile turned ugly.

She filled in the blanks alright. “And all I do now is lay in bed. Sleep. All I do is now think about not being alive because I don’t do anything, I feel like a wasted pieced of space.” Silence followed her words. It grew to the point of exploding and she went along with it.

    “Spike…”

“In the morning. I just want to sleep now.”
