• Windsong looked at the sky. It was dark and the stars shone brightly in the midnight gloom. Shadow trotted up to her.
"Have you seen Serenity? She was coming to stay with you while I was checking the mountains."
"No, she hasn't been here all day. Maybe Sundancer can See where she is."
"I already asked her. She said she Sees darkness and pain."
"We need to find her. She is our only foal."
"I know. I already have Hawkwing and Star ready to go. I was thinking of taking Heart with too."
"Ask Sundancer. Heart is her daughter, though Sundancer has two others besides her. We could maybe take Shining or even Cobra."
"Heart could help us more. If Serenity is hurt, we'll need Heart's help." Shadow walked away, saying the last bit over his shoulder. Windsong knew he had a point and a good one. She flicked her ear back to hear some uneasy muttering within the heard elders.
"I heard that their daughter was taken by humans."
"Why would humans come and take us?"
"They have always been agains us. They do not respect our choices."
"We are many times smarter then them."
"That must be why they took the filly."
"Probably so they could use us and turn us into dumb animals."
Windsong turned her ear forward. What they elders said was true. Humans took the young and often hurt the elder horses and left them for dead. Humans only wanted dumb beasts to work for them. They already had oxen, why couldn't they be pleased. She decided and trotted up to Sundancer.
"Sundancer, I ask that we may take Heart with us on our jorney. It may be long but I fear Serenity may be hurt. We desperately need her skills."
"I agree so long as you bring my dear child back," the old mare nickered. Windsong found Shadow pawing a map out in the ground.
"Sundancer has agreed to let us take Heart."
"So that means we will have You, Heart, Hawkwing, Star, and I."
    "I think that is plenty."
"We should leave Fireflower in charge while we're gone."
    "I agree."
    "When do we leave?"
    "At dawn."
