• This is pointless, my aim is good enough. Jerania thought to herself as she prepared another arrow in her bow and aimed at the target. There was a strange feeling within her compelling the young girl to continue shooting, almost like a…a fire. Jerania got bored sat down leaning against the dark, dirt-covered brick wall in the alley she was in. She began singing quietly to herself and as she began to feel relaxed, a voice disturbed the silence. “Jer, you there?” It was Thane, her annoying older brother who always interrupted. Jerania pushed her short, black hair behind her ear and stood up.
“Yes. What do you want, Thane?” she replied as he turned the corner into the alley she was in.

“Of all the places you could have target practice, you decide on a random old alley, seriously? I’ve been looking all over for you.” He commented, obviously annoyed.
“Does that bother you?” Jerania retorted, glaring at him with her large solid grey eyes. No one would ever know they were related, if it weren’t for the two of them having the same unusual eyes and the fact that they constantly argue with each other. Jerania sighed “I’ve been feeling odd lately, like—“ she was then interrupted by flames growing all around her. Thane jerked backwards to avoid being hit by the fire while Jerania did her best to control it and put it out. Once it died out, she stepped out of the now burnt-up alley

“I spend half my life trying to learn how to control these powers and this is what happens! Thane, I wish my powers were simple like yours, how did this even happen to us?” The young girl sighed, slightly stressed out. She was able to control fire, darkness, wind and ice, her brother said she was ‘the elemental alternative’ Thane was able to manipulate thoughts and read minds.
“I don’t know how, it just, well, happened! Mom, dad, and Josh are the only people who might know, do you see any of them around here? No, they’re gone, forever.” Thane exclaimed, their parents and eldest brother, Josh had all passed away in a car crash 10 years ago.
“You’re right, no reason to worry about how or why anymore.” Jerania admitted and sat back down.

She began to put her things back into her black side bag she always carried with her. “What should I do? I can’t go around with fire, darkness, ice, and wind taking over randomly” Jerania asked her older brother as she slung the bag over her shoulder, got up and began to walk away.
“How do you expect me to answer that? The only people in the City of Night with powers like yours are Kristianna, and, obviously, you.” Thane declared, his sister’s hands clenched into fists and it almost sounded as if she was growling. “Don’t ever mention… her again” she scowled. Thane, an 18 year-old, 6 foot tall half-vampire took a step back from his 14 year-old, 5’4 half-fairy sister out of fear because of the expression in her voice and her suddenly black eyes.
“Okay…?” he replied, slightly confused, not sure what angered her about Kristianna.

There was a sudden sound of large wings flapping and as soon as she heard that, a smile spread across Jerania’s face. She immediately knew it was Anek, her best (and only) friend who was half-dragon and half-human. He was also the brother of her greatest enemy, Kristianna. He flew down rapidly and transformed back into his human form, gracefully landing on his feet as he did so. “Hello Jerania” Anek greeted her with a grin on his face. Jerania punched him on the shoulder “Ow!” said Anek when she punched him.
“You know better than to call me that, you’ve know me for most of my life” she explained, Jerania had an odd dislike of being called by her full name, she preferred Jerry. Anek was well aware of the fact, which is why he always called her Jerania. According to him, a true friend’s first job is to tease your other friends, which was pretty much true. Suddenly, everything went black; Jerania sighed over-dramatically and brought the light back. Anek was laughing when she brought the light back
“So, you still haven’t figured out your powers? You’ve had, like 8 years to master them.” Anek teased as a grin spread far across his face.

Jerania felt like slapping him, but she chose not to. “Sometimes, you really make me feel like I should think of you what I think of your sister” she mumbled. Anek hung his head, making his brown hair drape down and walked away dramatically, pretending to be sad. Jerania rolled her eyes and crossed her arms “You don’t need to cry, you’re both on completely different places on my ‘friend scale’ you’re definitely at least a million times higher than her” she commented and he walked back.
“Why is it that you two hate each other anyways?” Anek demanded, he asked everyday, and never got an answer. Jerania pretended she didn’t hear his question.
“So, how’s life?” she asked him, changing the subject. Anek sighed at his obvious loss; he would probably never get a definite answer.
“Boring, as always” he replied “how’s yours?”
“Meh, kind of annoying, something’s going on with my powers and I have no idea what, other than that, really boring.” Jerania admitted.

Jerania hesitated before she began speaking again “so…how’s that-um-sister of yours?” she asked, shuddering at the mention of his sibling.
“Well, fine, but I thought you hated her, why are you asking?” questioned a puzzled Anek.
“I am in need of Kristianna’s assistance” she answered, looking down at the dust and dirt covered brick road they stood on. “I’m afraid she’s the only person I know with similar powers to mine, and she has more experience. I’m going to ask her for help, though I don’t think she’ll be of much help” Jerania shook her head slightly and smiled to herself, her head hanging low “It’s kind of embarrassing to admit”

“Aren’t you two at a state of pure hatred and war?” Anek remarked.
“Yes, we are…so, do you guys still live on Luna Hill?” Jerania asked, unsure; even though they were best friends, she hadn’t gone to his house in almost 3 years.
“Well yea, but it’s a huge hill, it takes forever to get to the top.” He replied.
“I don’t think that’ll be much of a problem” Jerania replied, a statement which confused her friend, he didn’t know that she had gained abilities of her species. Being half fairy, she was now capable transforming into a fairy-like creature. Wings would sprout from her back, but her size did not change when she transformed.

They began venturing out towards the grand hill where Anek and his sister lived. It took approximately 45 minutes to get there walking, luckily, by the time they got there, Anek was able to transform back into his dragon form. He didn’t really know why, but every time he was a dragon, after he returned to human form, he had to wait an hour before returning to his dragon form once again. They stood at the base of Luna Hill and Jerania was speechless “has it grown?” she asked, she had forgotten how grand and beautiful it really was. There were bushes with geraniums sprouting hear the top of the hill, and the hill was covered in grass. There were rose bushes at the walls of the house and strangely enough, what Jerania found most attractive were the half-dead trees that lined a gravel path that traveled up the hill. It would probably take an hour to walk up there.
“Nope, don’t think so” Anek answered her, smiling at the odd question. “we can be up there in 10 minutes if you take a ride with me, it takes a bit over an hour to walk up there, which do you prefer?” he asked her.
“Neither.” Jerania grinned as large, black, bony wings sprouted from her back. Anek had transformed into his dragon form when he turned to look at his friend and there were wings on her. “You like them?” she smiled and started flying up the hill at an amazing speed. By the time Anek got to the top, Jerania had already gone back to human form and was sitting on the ground.

“Wow, why didn’t you tell me?” Anek asked “and dang, you’re fast!” he added.
“It happened a month ago, I wanted to get good before showing you, and obviously it worked” she smirked slyly as she got up and walked towards the front door. “I forgot how beautiful this place was” Jerania looked around at the grand house and garden that stood around her. The house was massive and dark, really beautiful and well built too. Anek walked into the house ahead of Jerania, on the inside, the house was brightly lit up, but the walls were all painted crimson red, the same color as Anek’s scales when he turned into a dragon.

Kristianna appeared at the top of the grand staircase that stood in the center of the room that everyone saw when they entered. Her long, dark brown hair was in a braid running down her back. “Anek, how dare you bring this, this scum into the house?” Kristianna questioned, motioning towards Jerania.
“You two girls were the best of friends until 3 years ago, I don’t understand you girls at all” Anek commented as he and Jerania walked up the staircase and stood in front of Kristianna.
“Answer me! What is…she doing here?” Kristianna repeated.
“Kris, I’m not looking for any troub—“ Jerania began, but was the interrupted.
“Don’t you dare call me Kris! Only my friends are allowed to call me that” Kristianna scowled and her usually dark eyes began glowing bright red and a ball of fire shot out of her hand and was about to hit Jerania in the shoulder. Jerania created a shield of fire with the swipe of her arm, almost as a reflex.

“Fight fire with fire” a sly grin spread across the faces of both girls as the words came out of both of their mouths simultaneously. This is where thing would get interesting. The two rivals looked like they could be sisters; they had very similar abilities. Kristianna with the basic elements (earth, wind, fire and water) and Jerania with her ‘alternative’ elements (fire, darkness, ice and wind). They also had the same color of hair and sense of style. Kristianna’s hair was brown and long, a braid running down her back and she was wearing a white tank top, black skinny jeans, and black combat boots. Jerania had brown hair that was straight and went up to about 2 inches above her shoulder; she also had two streaks in the bangs that draped across her face. Jerania was wearing a black tank top, red skinny jeans, and black all-star converse high-top shoes.

The two girls were quite literally throwing the elements at each other, and two hours later, they still were. A few hours had passed and Anek was still there, watching, at one point, Kristianna spotted him walk out the door. She ignored it and sent a blast of water towards Jerania; who froze it in its tracks and sent the icicles to her rival at a rapid speed. Then, the most amazing thing happened; the two of them shot a blast of power out of their hands simultaneously as an attack towards one another. It looked like an epic battle scene from Dragonball, the fire busting out from two people and large ball-like shape of fire where the two fires meet. The ball kept on moving from side to side as each side got more energy or lost energy.

The worst thing possible happened, the brothers of both girls walked in through the front door. The girls now understood why Anek really left, he wasn’t bored or tired. He had left to find Thane in hopes of him being able to calm the two calm down. It was as if when their siblings came in, they both gained an incredible increase in power. They couldn’t control it, and, the fire that was between the two at the moment exploded. The two shouted warnings to their brothers, but it was too late. Everything was blown to the walls, Anek and Thane flew out the door. Kristianna crashed down the stairs and Jerania blasted right out the window.

The first to recover was Kristianna, luckily, she had not broken anything in her body, merely received a few cuts and bruises. Thane also been pretty lucky, he rolled straight down Luna Hill and eventually stopped rolling, though he felt a bit sick from the spinning and didn’t get up for about an hour. He got bruised by the door frame, but that was it. Kristianna and Thane were scared; their siblings had been severely injured. Anek smashed through the door and into a rose bush, then down the hill and into a tree. Jerania fell out a second-story window that was closed and fell into a dead tree, eventually falling down to the ground, where a rose bush waited for her.

They had brought the unconscious, bloody bodies into the living room and lay them down on the now burnt floor. Kristianna and Thane cleaned up the bodies and changed them into clean clothing. Suddenly, the two turned to look at each other, remembering something they found about five years ago. It was a spell book, and Kristianna kept it with her all the time. “Does she still?” Kristianna asked Thane, knowing he would know what she meant. He nodded, which meant it would be in her bag, which she left outside earlier. Thane ran outside and thankfully, found the bag unharmed from the fire.

He brought it in and found a healing spell, all you had to do was boil rose petals in water and recite a spell. They went outside and gathered rose petals from the garden, then boiled them in the basement kitchen, which was not harmed. After boiling the petals, they went back to the living room and followed the instructions. Kristianna poured the boiled water with rose petals around the bodies in a large circle, which gave off an amazing aroma. Thane read over the words while she did so, then, they both recited the words in a calm tone as they stood in front of the bodies.
“These words I say, they will save the day.
    Problems occurred, that’s for sure
So now come back to me, or leave me be”
They finished saying the odd words and watched carefully as what must’ve been magic happened. A pink-ish light came from the circle formed around them and rose up, and kept on going up until it passed the roof. Then, Anek sat up as if he was waking up in the morning. “What just happened?” he asked in a tired voice. Then, Jerania sat up as well, though she looked much more tired the Anek, she stood up and all she could do was apologize.

They settled things out, and, amazingly enough, all four became the best of friends (again). Jerania ended up not needing help with power control anymore and the 3 year fight between Jerania and Kristianna was officially over, forever. “So, why did you come over that day anyways?” Kristianna asked Jerania one day, who just shrugged in response. “Come on, what was it?” Kristianna insisted, though it looked like she wasn’t getting an answer any time soon. She had a feeling she would find out soon though.
    ◌◌◌◌◌
Kristianna’s feeling that day had been correct, eventually everything was explained and the four friends did just about everything together. One day, they decided to walk up the path on Luna Hill, Kristianna was chatting with Thane while Anek was listening to music and Jerania was taking photos of, well, everything. “So what were you two fighting about anyways?” Anek and Thane questioned. Kris and Jerry turned to look at each other, a grin spread across both their faces and all they said was ‘stuff’. Thane, who could read minds always tried to find out, but the girls made sure to think of the weirdest things at all times, which wasn’t too hard for them. So in the end, maybe the power of control wasn’t really what Jerania needed, and nobody really knows how she gained it…
