• The day was Friday, one of the best days of the week in my opinion. To top it off, the sun was shinning merrily, the birds chirped happily. My small dachshund sat beside me on the steps of our porch as I watched the day go by. My headphones to my iPod was in, for I was listening to some music. It was the perfect day. Or so I had thought.
As always, my phone was in my pocket, so when it buzzed its warning to me, I pulled out my headphones. My dog glanced up to me, panting, and giving a look I swear was a smile. I giggled, and reached into my pocket, flipping open my phone. It was a text from only my best friend Cassidy. I smiled at it, I loved talking to her. I pressed the view button, then my jaw dropped as I watched the words on the screen, unmoving.
Sophie had seizer was all the screen said.
My heart seemed to drop into my stomach. I sat there for the longest time. Before long, my dog stood, nudging me softly with his nose. Sophie was Cassidy's golden retriever. I couldn't believe it. Could it really happen to her? Why? She was the greatest dog ever.
Memories flashed behind my eyes: Cassidy, Sophie and I running and playing soccer. When we simply sat in the sun and petted her silky fur. Or when we would play hide and seek, and when she would find us within seconds, we would laugh our heads off.
Unshead tears stung in my eyes as I texted as fast as my stiff fingers would allow.
    . . . That's horrible was all I could manage.
I couldn't bring my mind to understand. Sure Sophie was just a dog, but she was Cassidy's dog. She loved her dog. Besides, thoughts of this happening to my own beloved dog just made the sting that much more unbearable. Cassidy loved her pets.
What seemed a perfect day just moments before, was shattered. I gave my dog's head a pat, and I stood on wobbly legs. As I walked inside, my mom managed to ask, "What's the matter?" before I slammed my door, burring my head in the pillows.
