• John wells, was the kind of man who, before the depression, could have throngs of women on his tail, tons of beggers willing to be shot in the leg for him. But he had one love, and was a very generous man. He wore his top hat to the left as if he was trying to cover a bald spot, but how could he, he was gorgeous. Then came Mary, she was about the most amazing girl you could ask for. She had flowing black hair that darkness would envy, and the face of an angel. She wasnt afraid of the skyscrapers, or anything else for that matter, especially other men. John was not afriad of many things either, the stocks a mugger with a revolver, even the stocks crashing. But one thing shook him in his bed, even with the lovely body of Mary next to him. He had a very awful dream in vivid colors. He was a poor man, finding his money working on the skyscrapers. He sat on one of the steel bars and smiled for the camera, because before this, he found the view exciting. He saw a black and white man, split down the middle as in a non color television. He stood up and looked for it, but it vanished. He felt something on his shoulder, and it was the mans hand, it pushed him off, and snickered. John saw the ground coming ever closer. He couldnt wake. He let out a yell as he hit. He looked up without the control of his body, and saw people running over. As soon as he blinked he was in the air plummeting down again. This time it threw him out of the bed.
Mary had asked what had happened, and he threw up his meal. A servant offered to clean up the spill, but he rejected and thanked him for his kindness. The servant was black, but there was no such thing as racism in the Wells mansion. John didn't sleep that night, and the staff stayed with him along with Mary for the entire night. Now it was after the stocks crashed and he took a blind eye to it, as he had taken his money from the bank as his vault was on one of the higher flights near the window. He had five thousand dollars, which was bill gates in a boat with holes in that doesnt sink and the cure for aids in his pocket at the time. He thought long and hard on what he wanted to do with it, and he finally decided, He would make the only golden skyscraper ever. He had only the poorest People work on it, and the loved him for it. At it's finishing just before the war, he was almost middle class and ready to let this gold building become his only chance at renewing his wealth. A very very rich man came up among the crowd.
"If you can climb it, i will pay ten thousand dollars for it." The crowd was astounded, you could buy alaska with that kind of money. John had stuttered no no no. Then one of his servants, percival announced,
"and i will do it with him!" The crowd was even more astounded. John passed out on the ground. He woke hours later with the offer still standing. John shook with fear. He thought about it as he shook. It would be very easy to climb, it had very flat checkpoints, and the man with the offer now said rope could be used.
" I'll do it.." John said. Mary was weeping, and she promised, she would be on each flat surface to be there if he wanted to quit. The ropes were placed, and Percival started with John. His palms were sweaty, and his limbs shaking. He never looked down, with Percival talking to him the whole time. He was starting to get over his fear, and he took each pull up with passion. Before long he had gained a lead over percival, who was an old man. He had to look down to see if he had fallen and he had to go back and get him. No, he didnt have to, no one would care, and he had gotten over his fear. He looked down and it all came back to him. He saw himself falling. He saw the black and white man lighting his rope on fire. But he slid down anyway and helped him up to the first checkpoint, which was half of it. He was ten stories on the first flat point. Percival said: "I can't do it anymore Johnny i just can't"
"No Percival you can, this time i will help you." Percival went in front of John, and they had almost made it. Until the wind blew. John pushed and pushed up, till the black and white man appeared. He cackled with laughter. Now John was slipping. John started to faint and fell back, but with all his might Percival caught him, and pulled him up. The black and white man vanished. John split the money with Percival, and lived his life to the fullest with Mary, had two daughters, and finnally slept well at night.
