    _____

It at least had been sometime now, the moment of truth would finally come, and I would be released into the world as a woman. Not that I already wasn’t, college had been a hard time, as I entered only the mere age of nineteen. Now I’m finishing as twenty-four, not a bad age either, I might add. I remember the summer days of my adolescent life, as if only it was yesterday, Donnie Hartman, My best friend for what is now twenty years. It felt as if I knew him forever though, would run along the beach sides with me, even though he brought his ex-girlfriend along, we still had fun. I’d say, you are probably thinking, I have some sort of crush on him? Yes. I do. Now I sound like those typical teen movies, but alas, it’s true. For now, I keep it professional, I’ve come to far into this best friend thing just to throw it all away, and so now it was time to graduate from Stonebridge University, with Donnie Hartman by my side. Both getting degrees and after that we become Lawyers. But in this economy, it’s going to be hard on doing so.

That’s when my name was called, nervous and shaking a bit, I stepped up. I noticed a few sweat droplets at the corner of my eye, but that was just a side effect on my nervousness. But all of that faded away as I spotted Donnie smiling at me, his dreamy smile. His peachy skin glowed in the sunlight, that’s what I liked about Donnie; he tanned well, most of the guys at Stonebridge were as pale as vampires. Me, I’m mocha colored, from my mixed race. Great, Donnie got me off track, now I received the rolled up paper, and stepped aside to have my picture taken. I wondered if the group would engage in the throwing of the hats, I believe it was a tradition on doing so. The final batch of kids were called, and Donnie stood next to me, as we all smiled for a group picture, and then to my surprise we all threw our hats in the air. I guess it was tradition; either that or we just copied some movie from somewhere.

Afterwards I decided on my meal as a burger from Big Bun Burgers. I didn’t want anything that was a heart attack waiting to happen, but I didn’t want a small burger so that hunger deprivation would start to kick in either. So I got to Big Bun Medium, with cheese and pickles, and of course the meat and the buns. I waited for about five minutes then my meal order was out, I picked up the tray and sat at a table. Donnie rushed in and sat down, he looked sweaty and like he seen a ghost. “What the heck happened to you?” I commented. He was red in the face. “I just came up with the best idea, ever.” I gave him a smile, “Oh really, it wouldn’t happen to be getting a giant baby bottle filled with chocolate pudding?” A small smile spread across his face, he was always subjecting me to crazy stunts like that.
“No, but that sounds like a good idea.”
“Uh-huh, just tell me why you decided to interrupt me while eating my meal.”
“Well, I was thinking of opening a Detectives agency, I know you wanted to be a cop all your life. And, plus we need the money.” I took a sip of my coke, the spit it out as he said that. Was he crazier than I thought he was? Yes, that was my answer to that.

“Are you out of your mind? Where can we afford the money to rent out a space? I don’t have any, that’s for sure.” Donnie gave me a “don’t worry about it” look, oh no, this wasn’t good, how did he get the money anyways. We both knew Donnie couldn’t hold up a job like the rest of us. The last resort I had in mind was he stole it. Did he steal it? Was he working for the mob or some other gang I was unaware of? So, the curiosity killed the cat, but this cat was very curious and so she was going to ask. “Donnie, please don’t tell me you stole the money.” His eyes widened and then he laughed, he laughed hard. “I am appalled that you would think I would steal money. Well, I saved up, for you of course, and I got some help from some friends.” I gave him a concerned look, maybe he didn’t steal the money, but his so called “friends” might of, and, I didn’t even bother to ask. Perhaps it was a good idea, my father would be as peachy as a peach tree, if that made sense, to see his daughter saving the world from scumbags. Finishing my burger, and throwing away the paper, I whipped around and gave Donnie a hug. He was happy that I agreed to go with this crazy plan, and asked me if I wanted to see a movie. I said yes, and it was a date, more or less a friend date.

I was expecting to go to an actual movie theater, but that wasn’t the case, not at all. I heard the doorbell ring, a huge smile spread across my face, and as I opened the door, it was Donnie and he gave me a smile. “Hey beautiful. Harold and Maude, you and me.” He stated as he held up a copy of Harold and Maude, after seeing his choice of DVD, I smiled, this was way better than some cheesy romantic comedy. He let himself in, as always, I don’t mind because he does it all the time, like he owns the place or something. In Stonebridge you could find just about anything, an arcade and a diner. And then there was a local police station, the place my father worked at. Right next to the police station was a video store, all run down, but still sells some pretty decent movies. And that is where Donnie got Harold and Maude, perhaps one of the greatest love stories, ever. He slid the DVD into the DVD player, and selected start on the menu.

When that was over with, Donnie had a few tears in his eyes. That struck me as strange, and a bit bizarre, I’ve never in my whole life seen Donnie cry. Even when he falls he doesn’t cry, his face just looks all jumbled up and weird, so I patted his back. “What’s wrong, why are you crying, I know the ending is sad.” He turned away for a moment and I knew he wiped the tears out of his eyes. “What are you talking about? I wasn’t crying.” I raised an eyebrow. “I just saw you cry, but hey, I suppose you didn’t know that women liked a sensitive man.” He smiled and started to cry again, he got up and said something about meeting Patricia Barkley, some girl we went to college with, and as soon as I blinked my eyes, he was out the door. I shook my head and laughed, this guy was crazy. He was probably thinking on scoring a date with her just because I said, girls like a sensitive man? Wow. That’s all I’ve got to say is wow. What was this feeling I was feeling? Oh yes, I believe the proper term for that is, jealousy? Yes, I was a bit jealous so what? Maybe is I go to bed, I’ll forget about him, but for now I have to worry about finding a job, and finding a job fast, in this economy, child please.

I woke up in the morning hours it was eight thirty, and by now I have a schedule, wake up and yada, yada. Sighing as I walked over to the kitchen to fix myself a breakfast containing eggs, bacon and toast, nothing to fancy. Upon finishing that, I got a phone call, it was of course Donnie Hartman, I picked the phone up from it’s receiver and placed it to my ear. “Yeah. What? You opened up the Detectives agency! Are you out of your mind? Okay, I’m calming down. Fine I’ll be over there in about ten minutes.” I felt like slapping him right now, but heck why was I mad? He’s the one who is paying, so I calmed down and rushed to my room to throw something on. I pulled a “Frankie says relax” shirt over my upper body, and some jeans on my lower body. I tied the last of my shoelaces on my Chuck Taylor’s and was off to my car. I felt as if today was going to be a long day, a very, very long day.

    More?
