• Preface

I never realized how fragile the human body really was until that moment. I sat there holding his nearly lifeless form in my lap, blood soaking through the sleeves of my gown. My face was stained with tears that continued to rolled down my cheeks. I thought it impossible that my body had any tears left to cry I had already shed so many. The only thing I could think about was how I would never see his face again. I would never again hear the sound of his voice, feel his hand on mine or see that smile.
He opened his eyes slightly and stared up into mine. “Don’t cry” he whispered his voice a low and feeble rattle. He had already lost so much blood. When would Arebella arrive with help, she had been gone for so long. “Don’t cry.” He repeated, “Everything is going to be ok.” He reached up, his hand shaking, and brushed the tears from my cheek. I placed my hand on his to hold it there, and thought of the journey my life had taken me on that put me in this moment. I regretted none of it.
He pulled my head down closer to his and kissed me for the final time. It was in that moment that I realized I would trade my life for his. That given the chance I would more then happily lay down my life to give him even one more day on this planet. It was also in that same moment that the hand he had placed on my cheek began to slide down my face. In that moment that his body went limp.
