tab Once day, Angela was on her way to work at the hospital. Her phone rang while she was stopped at an intersection. She dug through her purse and took out her phone. The called ID read a number from another hospital, one she knew about but had never been to. Tentatively, she answered the phone, expecting to hear that her aunt was in the hospital again. She had been in and out of the hospital since she had gotten knee surgery, and was hoping that it was just another false alarm.
tab "Hello?" Angela answered gently, "This is Angela Pedinsky speaking."
tab "Hello, Angela. This is Dr. Lori Scotts, over at United Medical. I'm here with your father, Brian Logan?" said the voice on the other side of the conversation. The doctor sounded sad, as if she were bearing a heavy load.
tab "Yes, that is my father. Has...has something happened to him?" Angela replied, afraid of the answer she was going to receive, "Is he alright?"
tab "I'm afraid not, Mrs. Pedinsky. He came here late last night complaining of severe chest pains. We admitted him, and while we were running some blood tests in the lab he had a heart attack. I'm very sorry to have to tell you this, but you father passed away at 4:36 this morning," Dr. Scotts said.
tab Angela flashed back to the day she found out about her mother passing away. She remember how sad she felt, knowing that she would never see her mother again. Now this is happening to her father, as well. "O..okay. Th...thank you," Angela stammered, on the very edge of breaking down, "when is a good time to come by and say goodbye?"
tab "Any time today, Mrs. Pedinsky. Should we arrange for the funeral services, or would you like to arrange that yourself?"
tab "No, no that's alright. I...I'll do it myself. Thank you..." Angela replied, hanging up and putting her phone back in her bag. She pulled over and lay her head down on the steering wheel. She began to cry, her shoulders shaking violently with every breath.
tab Once she collected her thoughts, she drove to work and went to her boss' office. She gently opened the door, her eyes red and puffy, cheeks pink, and motioned for her boss, Dr. Eileen Jacobson, to come outside.
tab "What's wrong, Angela?" Eileen asked worriedly when she met up with her employee. "You look like you've been sobbing."
tab "I have...I have to miss work today. I just found out that my father died of a heart attack. I need to go to the hospital and...and say goodbye," Angela said, trying to contain herself.
tab "Oh, god, Angela. I'm so sorry. Sure, yeah, take as much time as you need. We'll find someone to fill in for you. Go, go and take care of everything. Don't worry about anything here," Eileen said, hugging Angela and patting her on the back.
tab "Thank you, Eileen," Angela said. With that, she rushed out the door and drove to United Medical.
