• Sudden Death

    Chapter 1

It was the first day of school and Rena had another strange dream. It was an odd dream, about a mysteriously familiar boy named Luke....... At breakfast Rena gazed at the wall just thinking about the boy from that dream. It didn’t take long for her to realize there was the sound of beeping in front of her house.

“What is that horrible beeping?!? Stop it immediately! I am trying to sleep!” Her mother wined as she cuddled up into her bed covering her ears. “Stop it this instant!” Rena stepped out, and noticed it was her friend Tom. Tom was a boy Rena knew since kindergarten. She also had a crush on him since the 6th grade.

“Hey Rena need a ride to school?” Tom asked cheerfully

“Well my mom is kinda mad about all this honking from your car…” She looked at him trying not to laugh. “But that’s ok-”

Tom cut her off. “I am so sorry! I didn’t mean to start a commotion! I just wanted to be nice and offer you a ride to school. After all it is pretty chilly outside so I didn’t want you to catch a cold.” Tom turned to his side blushed a little and looked back at Rena.

“No, I think I can walk to the bus in one peace.” She laughed. “And it’s no problem at all. I like to bother my mom a little myself. Especially when dad’s not there to back her up, since dad is in New York right now.”

Tom looked away. He had totally forgotten that her dad was far away. And she had no one, who was a boy at least, to keep her company when her mom wasn’t around. “Well are you sure? I can take you, we are going to the same place after all.”

“No it’s ok, seriously. Well see you in class ok?” She smiled, a smile that she only gave Tom and nobody else.

When she got to school, the school bully, or as other people call her the class president. Hated Rena, she knew that for a fact, but today she did something different, she stuck out her foot from under her desk and tripped Rena, making her fall on the ground.

“Ha, Ha, Ha” The whole class laughed at her. “I guess the clumsiest in the class is Rena Anne Heart.” The class still laughed.

Yes, the school knew her name; it was because of what happened in her year in the tenth grade, which was last year. The class president, Maymi, the one who tripped Rena, went on to the intercom and told the whole entire school her whole entire name. She still didn’t know how she found out, but it ruined her life.

Ever since she moved into the house she is in, Maymi had been haunting her. Rena thinks the house is haunted, to bring her such horrible memories. Another reason she thought it was, was the old owner, said an evil witch used to live in that house. And every Halloween she would take a mere child that was young and fresh and drink their blood. He said it happened to his child named Jane. Who thinks the witch is her mother, since her mother left her when she was only 6 years old. The owner also mentioned that the witches name was Gloria. He also said it will bring something called, Sudden death.

Luckily, during the day of Halloween she would always go somewhere with her family. Unfortunately this year was different. They family decided to stay home for Halloween.

The next morning, Rena woke up extra early and went to Tom’s house, without notifying him first. She walked to Tom’s, knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer. Tom answered it, still half asleep and was in pajamas. His hair was messed up, just staring at her, or it could be staring at the sky.

“Can I come in, I want to talk to you?” She asked impatiently. Tom didn’t answer, he just stared at her with clueless eyes.

He looks like an idiot, Rena thought to herself, trying not to laugh. She clapped her hands in front of Tom’s face and began to yell at him to wake up until he came to his senses.

“Rena!?!” he said with a surprise “What….What are you doing here?”

“Come to see you, and besides I need to talk to you, before I see Maymi.”

“Come in, I am going to go change so wait for me on the couch ok?” He smiled and ran upstairs. After he got dressed he sat on the couch next to her and said “what about Maymi do you want to talk to me about?”

“She is just plain out, mean to me. I don’t know what I can do anymore. I already had to deal with her since kindergarten. I don’t want to deal it with it anymore. Plus all my friends are going to Maymi to be friends with her. And even if I try to become her friend, I can’t because she won’t accept me!” Rena wined; she was both confused and scared all at once! She looked at Tom and put her head on his chest and started to cry. Tom was holding her now, and put his head on hers, and kissed it.

“It’s ok; I won’t go to Maymi ok? Because honestly, I really just want to be by your side, because the truth is, I really like you Rena.”

“I really like you too, but I-”the school bell rang, and Tom stood up.

    “I’ll take you.” Tom suggested.

Rena began to get into his car. She looked at Tom and blushed as she reached for his hand. Thank you, Tom, I feel so much better now.”

Tom brought her hand to his lips and kissed it. Yet, with utter embarrassment he quickly looked back at the road.

When they got to school, Tom’s hand released hers as he stepped out of the car. Rena watched him walk away mysteriously, as he went to a group of his friends. After a while the school bell rang once again to dismiss the 9th to 12th graders to go to class.

In 3rd period, she was walking to class still daydreaming about Tom and the moment in the car. She ran into someone, but she didn’t know who he was. He was a little boy that seemed like a 3rd grader. The scary part was that 3rd graders don’t go to high school. The boy was pale and looked like a “little boy zombie” that came from the grave. The boy was dirty and his clothes were ripped. The boy also had cuts everywhere.

“How is a little boy like you, in a high school?” Rena asked cheerfully. The boy stared at her and didn’t answer. “Well?” Rena said impatiently.

“b…..b….beware of l…l…Luke.” The boy said with a trembling voice.

“Who’s Luke?” Rena said eyes widened. But before Rena could say anymore, the boy took out a knife from his pocket and slashed the knife across her arm. It was a mere cut but it was spilling with blood. Blood fell on the floor, as Rena ran to go to the nurse’s office.

As her mom rushed into the school panicking with a first aid kit in her hand, she had tears all over her face. The cut wouldn’t stop bleeding. The nurse ran over to Mrs. Heart trying to comfort her as the nurse also started to cry. A few moments later, a 12th grade boy that looked strangely familiar boy walked into the nurse’s office. He was staring at Rena, as he walked towards her.

“That’s a horrible cut! Are you ok!?! Here let me see your arm.” He put his hand over her arm as the cut slowly began to heal. He kissed the cut after it completely healed. Rena looked at the boys face as he lifted it to face her. The boy had the exact same face as the guy named Luke in her dream.

“You look familiar. Have I seen you before?” Rena asked cautiously.

“I don’t know…But I do know you are incredibly beautiful…Would you mind going to the beach will me this Saturday night?” His face was close now. He leaned forward until his lips touched hers. But immediately Rena pushed him away.

“There is a person I love, and I can’t do this to him!” Rena’s eyes widened as she stared at the boy.

“Are you going out with him? The boy I mean?” His eyes were cruel and thirsty. Rena had never seen eyes so cruel.

“No…… I guess I am not.” Rena looked at the other direction completely hurt.

“Then he doesn’t like you enough to actually ask you out. Come on, give me a chance.” He was laughing now, but something stopped him. He looked around and noticed the nurse had been watching the whole time.

“What is the meaning of this Luke!?! You know that she is hurt! What are you trying to do put her under pure pressure!?! She doesn’t need that now!” Luke looked at her arm and smiled.

“Are you sure she is hurt? I took care of her, look!” The nurse looked at her arm, at the missing cut.

    “How did you-”

Luke cut her off “Anything for my new girlfriend, right Rena?” He was now walking out of the nurse’s office.

"How did you know my name?” Rena yelled trying to get Luke's attention.

“Of course I know your name….. I knew you from a long time ago.”

The next period was lunch and Rena was as hungry as ever. She sat down with her friends as she began to eat but then all her friends gave her a dirty look. "I thought you had a cut. Geez you are such a liar Rena! You see I don’t like liars, so you can move your little butt from this seat and eat somewhere else!”

As Rena began to move to another table, she noticed that her friends greeted Maymi as she sat down in her spot. Rena quickly sat down once again at a lonely and empty table.

"I was wondering where you were." Rena turned around to face the direction of the voice. It was Luke, now with soft cheerful eyes that looked down at her. "So what do you say? Are you going to the beach this Saturday night?"

"I already told you no, why won't you leave me alone?"

“How can I leave such a pretty girl alone like you? There is something from you that I want.”

"What do you want? What do you mean?" looking at Luke as if she was finally interested.

"You will find out if you go to the beach with me." His eyes were cruel and evil now, the exact same eyes that he gave her in the nurse's office.

“I will think about it.” She said with a sigh. She knew that if she didn’t say yes he would keep bothering her anyways.

“Good, so I will pick you up at around 7:00? Is that ok?” His face was back to being cheerful. But to Rena that was kinda creepy.

“Ok… 7:00 it is!” She tried to smile even though she was completely disturbed by his cheerfulness.

After lunch, Rena started to walk to her 3rd period class. Yet for some reason she didn’t feel safe, even though she was surrounded by about 300 people. As she tried to squeeze through the people she heard a scream. Everybody turned around. And noticed Maymi was being chased by the little boy that gave her the cut.

Rena found herself chasing after Maymi, who now was crying. She had run for her life until she was covered with sweat. She kept running from the mysterious boy until she tripped over a huge rock. As the boy slowly caught up to her, he raised his hand that had a knife in it. Yet, when he looked at her, he stopped. He put the knife in his pocket and ran off. As Rena stood there just watching the boy run, she had a look of confusion and pain all at once. Who was this strange little boy?

The next evening, Rena went on the date that she promised with Luke even though she never wanted to go. He was waiting on a private cliff, a little too romantic if you ask me. He smiled at Rena, that warm yet evil smile. What was wrong with him anyway? He comes into the nurse’s office and heals her arm. How is that normal? She walked cautiously to Luke. She didn’t know why she was afraid. But her heart was beating as fast as a roller coaster. When she finally got at least an inch away from him, she stopped and began to speak, regardless of how he was staring at her.

“Why did you ask me out anyway? There are a lot of other girls in the school you know!” Rena snapped.

“You don’t like me?” Luke looked down. It was both adorable and disturbing.

“It’s not like that, I mean… You are more like a friend…kinda…I don’t know I can’t explain it…” Rena was confused. She didn’t know what to do.

“So do you like me?” Luke’s eyes were full of hope. How can Rena resist?

“Yeah, I guess I like you.” A smirk ran through her face. You can obviously tell she was lying. “Well I guess I should go. I mean, well we have been here for a long time, I think.”

“We only have been her for 3 minutes. You don’t really like me do you?”

    “Of course I like you! It’s just…”

“Quit lying! If you don’t like me then just tell me. You don’t have to worry about hurting my feelings. I was the one who asked you out. Regardless of how you felt, so it’s my fault ok. So tell me the truth. Do you really like me?”

“Sorry I don’t, you see we just meet and you know…”

“So I have a chance! I can still see you?!?”

“Yeah, I guess that’s ok. But do you think we can be friends for now? You see I still haven’t gotten a boyfriend. And the thing is, not to be rude but like I said I like somebody. And I want to go out with him. I am sorry.”

“That’s ok. I sort of saw that coming anyways. Go after that boy. If I have fallen for you then the boy certainly can, trust me.” His face was peaceful and kind now. Who can resist, that smile. Rena felt warmth in her heart. Could it be? She actually is not afraid of him anymore?

“Do you want to hang out with me, during lunch?” Rena said trying not to smile.

“But don’t you want to hang out with Tom? I mean the boy?” Luke hesitated.

How did he know about Tom?

“Oh, its ok! I can hang out with you!” Rena hesitated.

“Ok, good. Talk to you at lunch.” Luke replied with a smile and kissed Rena on the cheek. “I’m going to go now ok?” and with that, Luke walked away.

At lunch they served mashed potatoes with fries. Quite an odd combination but that’s Franklin Pierce for you. Franklin Pierce is the school I go to. The school is very small and filled with people that do drug, alcohol and all that junk. Franklin Pierce is the school with probably the most disturbing stories of teachers as well. For example, the health teacher, Mrs. Grube is known to be an ex prostitute. Although, we don’t know that for sure, by looking at the way she dress’ it diffidently makes the student body think so. Especially the atmosphere of her classroom is somewhat disturbing.

In my 9th grade year I remember having to take Mrs. Grube’s class. The atmosphere was somewhat different then any other classroom. I remember clearly that the classroom kind of made me sick to my stomach. I wasn’t sure if it was because I had all the rumors caught up in my head and it just made it like that or if it actually was like that. Ether way, her classroom made me sick.

Mrs. Grube’s appearance was always somewhat disturbing. The way she dress’ is always some type of attire that showed too much skin or the attire was in odd colors. I remember her coming to school in a Salmon colored suit. Although on that suit she got lots of comments from her students, I believe that they only said that to make fun of her. This is kind of sad for Mrs. Grube’s end.

I stopped thinking back to my ninth grade year when I saw Luke walk up to me and kiss me on the cheek again. I watch him eat his Mashed potatoes in disgust, and before I knew it he was staring at me. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking for sure, but I ignored the fact and took another bite of my disgusting mashed potatoes that they had called “food.”

“So how are you today?” I looked at Luke, hoping to start a conversation, but in the end I only got a look that was surprised. It was the type of surprised look you see when you win the one million dollar lottery. I watched him put his index finger up to me giving me the message to wait a moment as he chewed.

“Whoa! You’re actually talking to me?” Luke smiled at me, he looked accomplished.

“Yeah, I am. Why would I not?” I looked at him, laughing.

“I just thought that you were the type of person that wouldn’t ask how a person was, unless forced to.” He looked down, half smiling and half chewing. I guess the mashed potatoes were chewy?

“How are the potatoes?” I smiled at him. He looked at me and started to smile to.

“Horrible. Simply horrible.” And then within a blink he picked up his tray and threw the potatoes away into the nearest trashcan. “Sorry about that Rena.”

“Sorry for what?” I looked at him blank. He didn’t do anything wrong and now he’s apologizing?

“For getting up without telling you I was going to throw away my potatoes.”

“Oh! You don’t have to apologize for something as simple as that! Seriously!” he was looking at me weird. And then slowly opened his mouth to say something

    “Thanks.”

I walked to my next class. Why did I get along with Luke so well? Could I have fallen for him? I shook my head to shake it out of my head but, I was still curious. By the time I got to my next class, I was completely confused. It made things worse to see Luke in my class. Yet once again, I shook it off and this time, those stupid Luke thoughts came out of my head.

Today we ended up talking about Cell membranes. Did some Microscope lab too, I wasn’t paying much attention. Biology was boring to me. So I guess you can say I never paid attention to it.

I was just distracted by how Luke was staring at me. Why didn’t I care if he did? If it was the “normal” me, then I would go up to him and smack him the face! Puzzled by my own mind; my heart started to react, my heart started to beat fast. What was wrong with me!?!

Once class ended it was already the end of the day. It was time for me to see Tom. Tom and I were supposed to hang out. Yet, where was he. I waited in the courtyard like he told me to .After around 30 minutes I sat at the nearby bench. Where was Tom?

Without realizing it, I have fallen asleep on the bench. I woke up to raindrops that fell from the sky. I was covered in rain and soaking wet. I sneezed a little and got up and started to run home. Although my house is actually quite far, I still managed after an hour. Running the whole time exhausted me.

When I got home, I took a warm shower. That definitely satisfies me. It still bothered me though. Why didn’t Tom show up? Tom would never ditch me without telling me. I just hope nothing happened to him.

The next day, I looked for Tom in the morning. He was nowhere in sight. I asked everyone I was around, all his friends. Everyone! He was nowhere to be found. Not to mention we didn’t have any class’ so I couldn’t just wait till class starts. I felt a tear fall from my face.

When I heard the bell ring I started to sigh, and walk to class. Yet, something stopped me. Yes, once again it was Luke. He had a worried expression but, I knew he was hiding something.

“Looking for your boyfriend?” He asked

“He’s NOT my boyfriend! And yes I am looking for him.” I replied stubbornly.

“You know... I know where he is right?” Luke’s voice was dark. I had chills though my back.

Ignoring such a voice I replied. “Luke you need to take me to him” I seemed excited. Was I?

Luke smiled and pushed me to the nearby wall. “What if I don’t want to take you to Tom?”

Next thing I knew, Class had already started. Why was I still outside? Especially with Luke?! I just looked at Luke. His expression was extremely evil. I didn’t know what he was thinking; until he started to lean forward. I tried to struggle. I couldn’t move.

My lips touched his. Something felt right. I don’t know if it was the way he kissed me. Next thing I knew was my arms started to come around him. We were kissing more then once. That’s for sure. I could feel my heart beat, and at the same time I felt something. Terrified by my own feelings I pushed him away.

“What did you do that for!?” I yelled.

“Well it seemed like you liked it” He licked his lips.

“That doesn’t have to do with anything! What did you do that for?! Can’t you control your hormones?!” I screamed. I was surprised that none of the teachers heard us.

“Oh? I think it is you who needs to control hormones. I mean seriously, you were the one that wanted it.”

His expression disgusted me. “I never said I did, did I?”

“Hmm… I don’t know. When we kissed, it seemed like you enjoyed it.”

Was he rubbing it in my face? “So! What does that have to do with anything?!”

I just looked away, and gave up. He was going to win anyways. “Fine you win, just don’t tell Tom.”

“Tom? Oh, I see. You don’t want him to know you are cheating on him” Luke had a smirk on his face. It was easy to see he was angry.

“Like I said he is not my boyfriend!” I gave him a dirty look, and walked away. I didn’t want to deal with Luke anymore. At least I didn’t want to deal with it today.

When I got home I gave Tom a call on the phone. His mom answered and said he wasn’t home. At this point I knew something was up. Tom is always home. I felt a tear run though my face.

Where could Tom be?! I could feel myself almost losing it. Next thing I knew I stood up and ran out the door, with nothing but some jeans and a t shirt. Outside was rainy and icy. Yet, I didn’t care.

I ran around the neighborhood, all the stores around me, screaming Tom’s name over and over. All I got out of it was dirty looks and even some yelling back “Shut the hell up!” After an hour or two I began to walk to the wishing well next to the coffee shop. Sat there, crying. I stopped when I realized there was a familiar figure standing right in front of me.

    Chapter 2

When I saw the figure in front of me, I stood up and ran to it. I knew in my heart that it was… It was Tom. I hugged him and started to cry. Tom looked at me, and smiled.

“Why are you crying?” I could feel Tom combing my hair. Was this telling me to stop crying? Yet I still continued. I was so happy.

“Why wouldn’t I be crying” I wiped off one of my tears. “I was so worried!”

Tom held me close. I couldn’t let go. I didn’t want to ask him anything. Although I had so many things to ask him, I decided to ask him at a later time. Right now, I was too into the moment. By the time Tom let go, I was satisfied. Tom smiled, I couldn’t help but stare. Could this be? that I have fallen for Tom even more? I ignored my thought and smiled.

“Tom!” I smiled. “Since you decided to disappear out of nowhere, you have to pay for what you did!”

Tom looked clueless. “Huh?” He even tilted his head a little. It was really cute.

“Tomorrow, after school, meet me at the coffee shop! From there you gotta hang out with me the whole day ok?!” My face had lit up, I could feel it. I felt amazing. I found the courage to ask Tom on a date. Now, I just had to wait for Tom to respond for my request.

“That will be great!” Tom smiled. “Well, then. Get some sleep. I got a date with you tomorrow.”

When Tom said that, my heart skipped a beat. Tom truly is amazing I thought. From this moment on, I promised myself, that I would never let Tom go.
