• Once upon a time, there was a girl named Jaclyn who lived with her stepmother, who was very mean to her. Jaclyn also had a stepsister named Mary. The family was quite wealthy but they shared nothing with her. They were dressed in fancy clothing and dined on the finest food in the village. But Jaclyn only wore tattered rags and ate leftovers. She only had one valuable thing, which was her friend Milo. Jaclyn and Milo were the best of friends, he was always there to help her through her life, since he was an orphan too, living on the streets. One day, Jaclyn and Milo met on the bridge, the very high bridge near Jaclyn’s house, the spot they always met at. Jaclyn’s stepmother asked her to clean up the kitchen, while she went off to the market. After Jaclyn left, the stepmother snuck right behind Milo, who was waiting patiently for Jaclyn, and shoved him off the bridge. He fell from the bridge’s height and into the water, and died away, into the river beneath the bridge. When Jaclyn came back, Milo was no more, just a soul in the air. She knew someone pushed him, because he had the best balance she had ever seen. She ran home in tears and threw herself on the floor. She cried the whole night and then she fell into deep sleep.
Jaclyn awoke with the sound of a man knocking at the door, she opened the door and saw that it was an old man, who said, “Your friend was indeed pushed off by your stepsister, but his soul still lingers, find him, and he will help you with whatever you may ask, but do not waste his gifts.” With that, he left, without another word. She began to look for Milo’s spirit near the bridge; she thought she’d never find him, but to her surprise his soul sat on the bridge, waiting for Jaclyn.
“Jaclyn,” he told her, “I can see you are in great distress, what is going on?”
“Milo, you’re dead, that’s what’s wrong. I want to know if I can ever get revenge on my stepmother.”
“Well, you’d have to tell her that she murdered me in front of the king. Then he’ll get really angry.
Jaclyn left and soon she was dressed in clothes nicer than her stepmother’s. She walked in and told the king everything. The king ordered an arrest on the stepmother and stepsister. But, when no one was around, her stepmother snuck up and killed Jaclyn, but the guards heard her screams and captured the two, and sentenced them to death. No one lived happily ever after, but hey, did I say it would end happily? That’s what I thought.
