• You left with no trace, no warning

tab Song lyrics flooded into my head while I was strolling home. My eye’s where swollen from crying, my cheeks were burning from wiping my tears with my sleeve, and my heart was broken from someone I love just leaving my life. Some say a broken heart is the best time to write a song. I don’t know why though, but it is a wonderful way to tell everyone how you feel.

And I used to think you didn’t want to say anything, at all, to me

tab I really need to write this down.

tab I finally arrived at my house. I opened the door; my mom and Haley were standing there, concerned.
tab “Sweetie?” Mom looked at me in a what’s the matter way.
tab Tears started to race down my cheeks. “He’s gone,” I whimpered. “I was too late.” I plopped onto the bottom stair. Haley sat beside me and wrapped her arms around me. My mom did the same.

It felt like you didn’t want me to notice you were so far, far away

tab I wiggled out of the warming arms and ran straight up to my room…and wrote down the first verse of the song.

    ~*~*~*~

tab I skipped the last few days of school. If I were to go, I would have to face all the stupid gossip, which would make me feel even worse. I just stayed in my room, mostly lying in my bed, either sleeping, weeping, reading, watching TV, on my computer, or in the bathroom. I actually spent my whole summer this way.

It was a few weeks before the first day of school, and Haley barged into me room.
tab “Time for our annual New School Clothes Shopping Spree!”
tab I just stared at her and didn’t say anything.
tab “Oh, c’mon!” Haley leaped onto the bed next to me. “There are other fish in the sea! Throw your bait already!”
    tab No answer
    tab “Hello…”
    tab I sighed.
    tab “Tory-”
    I interrupted, “Michael liked fishing.”
tab “Tory! Stop thinking about him! That’s why you can’t let go!” Haley sat up. “Just forget about him, move on, because no one is worth crying over!”
tab Did I mention Haley can be much like a fortune cookie at times?
tab “I guess you’re right.” I sat up. “I have to throw my bait, reel it in, and hope that it’s not a nerd!”

tab Later at the mall, we spend, I don’t know, maybe over a thousand dollars. Haley got a new credit card, and she wanted to break it in.
tab But the thing was, the whole day, I was thinking about Michael. Haley got a pretzel because she was so frustrated with me, or she was hungry, whichever one.

tab Haley devoured her pretzel in thirty seconds and then mocked, “I don’t know if you noticed, but ten guys were hitting on you, ten fish were on your line and you let them go. What’s wrong with you?” She noticed me staring into space. “Stop thinking about him!”
tab “Sorry! Gosh.” I took a sip of my soda. “It’s just so hard!”
tab “No it isn’t.” Haley took a sip out of her coffee. “If he loved you so much: 1. he would have told you earlier that he was leaving. 2. He wouldn’t have left at all. And 3. He would have actually said that he loved you a few times.”
tab I thought about it, she was right. He never replied when I told him that I loved him. I became a little mad, and then calmed down. I smiled, “Where can I find new bait?”

    ~*~*~*~

tab It’s the first day of school and I’M A SENIOR!!! I am so excited! Michael is finally out of my system, I’m so over him. It’s time to move on and start over, and I’m starting with new clothes!
tab Haley and I had two classes together; Homeroom and P.E. Our homeroom was once again English, but the teacher is so strict, if you talk, automatic referral. I wish Ms. Smith did 12th grade too. All of my classes were boring, except for science, which was very interesting, especially today.
tab A lot of people but their binders and stuff in the aisle so everyone needs to watch out. I was to hurry to my desk before the bell rung, while reading my Cosmogirl! magazine. I tripped on someone’s binder and flew forward. Luckily this guy barely caught me.
tab Another guy who walked by, probably his friend, complemented, “Nice catch dude.”
tab “Thanks dude.” replied the guy holding me.
tab Still feeling a little dizzy from the fall, I panicked. “Ohmigod, I’m so sorry
tab “It’s ok; it’s my binder, so it’s my fault.” he replied.
tab I suddenly looked at him, and I think I felt, something.
tab The guy helped me from the ground. I was still staring. He had such beautiful brown eyes, like dark chocolate or something.
tab Throughout class, I completely forgot about Michael, I was thinking about that boy; his sparkling chocolate eyes, his lush dark chestnut hair, and his caring mind. He was so cute. I think a few times he glanced a me.
tab At lunch, I met up with Haley and told her everything.
tab “You mean Derik Ville? He has a girlfriend.”
tab “Oh,” I sighed. I glanced past Haley and saw Derik walking this way. This time, he didn’t come to ask me out or anything, but he came to talk to me.
    tab “Hey,” he smiled.
    tab “Hey,” I replied.
    tab “You feeling’ alright?”
tab I blushed, “Ya. I just wasn’t watching where I was going.”
tab “Like always,” Haley added. I elbowed her in the arm. “Ow!”
tab “So, I guess I’ll see you around,” Derik started to walk away.
tab “See you around.” I turned to Haley and tried to give her The Look. I failed.
tab “You know that look works only with me, right?” Haley giggled.
tab “I know, but it’s worth a shot.”

You thought I would forget all about you, but you were so wrong

tab At home later that day, I tried to finish my song. Now it’s kind of hard because I’m not as sad. I could write a new song about how I met Derik, and how we fell in love, and then get married, have children, and-
tab I’m really obsessing over this guy.

I cried for you for weeks, but you never came back
But then, I realized, life goes on.

Hmm. Maybe I can make “came” kind of a Jamaican tune.
tab I wrote down what filled into my head, including the notes. Then a part of the chorus popped into my head.

You are so far away from here, and I used to miss you so dearly,
But then I moved on, Oh yes I’ve moved on,
I’m not crying over you anymore.

Yes, oh yes, this is perfect! This is exactly how I feel!

tab “Tory, honey.” Mom screamed from downstairs. “Are you hungry?”
tab “No mom,” I yelled back. “I’m busy”

    So -

    tab “Are you sure?”
    tab “Yes Mom! I’m sure!”

    So good-

    tab “We have-”
tab “I’m not hungry!” I replied with frustration.

    So goodbye, goodbye.

tab As I wrote that down, my mom opened the door with a plate of fried chicken.
tab “Ok, maybe I’ll just eat one.” I took the plate from her, and engulfed all of what was on my plate.

    Yum.
