• Prologue

The girl looked down at the chaos unfolding beneath her, low on the ground. A smile crept its way up her face as she suppressed a giggle. To think that this was all happening because of her, that she was the reason why they were fighting, that she had been the cause of this— it got her excited just thinking about it.
The wind died down, leaving behind only a cold chill. The noise became muffled, though the fight continued on the ground; it was as if someone had pressed the mute button on the whole scene. Stepping back into the safety of the thickest tree branches, the girl looked up at the sky through the small partings in the branches. The clouds were a dark grey and swirled for barely a second before draining all the rain they held with a vengeance. This time, she couldn’t help but laugh and giggle as she jumped down from her tree, onto the outskirts of the ‘battlefield’.
Picking up her machete from her hiding place next to the tree, the girl wiped the blade clean on her pants and made her way across the length of the field, dragging the tip of the blade across the earth, people of almost all ages fighting around her. Lightning crashed around her, thunder following its lead dutifully. The whole change in weather— the rain still coming down with no plans of stopping— reminded her of an old children’s rhyme.
    Rain, rain…
It was easy to tell who was on her side and who wasn’t— her side was winning. Weak, injured and just plain scared adolescents retreated into the ‘safety’ of the forest. She smiled. As if they could do anything to protect you now.
    …go away…
Rain dripped down her face, widening her smile. Who’s idea was it to make it rain? It only helped her side even more and fitted to her plan perfectly. A young blond jumped in her path, fists raised. Resorting to your weak, human way, boy? She thought to herself, looking at the boy amused. Lightning crashed behind her, lighting the boy’s face, and before the thunder sounded, she raised the machete and struck the boy’s side before he could even think of fighting back. Walking around the boy, she continued down her path, pausing only to hear the thud as the body crumble to the ground.
    …come again another day.
She reached the hill and turned around. Ah, a much better view of the combat. Raising the machete above her head, lightning struck it and she gasped in ecstasy. It was time. Time for her and her followers to rise above the pathetic, weak humans they were forced to disguise themselves as. They waited long enough, now was their time to rule.
No, don’t go away, stay. Stay and watch the fight. Perhaps I can interest you in a healthy dose of blood and guts? Enjoy the show.
