• Artist Info: So, I'm a writer. Now, unlike others on Gaia who can claim to have loved writing since they were hardly old enough to read, I abhorred it. I was the kind of kid who put off writing assignments as long as possible, because just the thought of staring at a blank sheet of paper with the expectation that I was supposed to put something thoughtful and coherent onto it--that was enough to frustrate me to the point of tears (the habit of putting off assignments is still something that sticks with me today).

I was home schooled, and my mother was pretty much at a loss, I guess, because she decided to send me to a co-op class (home schoolers go to these, and a professional teacher of some sort is hired to teach a subject that the parents don't feel they have the time or capability to teach themselves). Academic Writing I. It was ninth grade material, and I was twelve. So who the hell knows what my mother was thinking, except, "Take my child and make her write!"

And I did, oddly enough. Probably mostly because I was intimidated by a teacher who was not my mother, but also because the woman who taught the class had clever and engaging ways of making writing seem less like a chore and more like something to be enjoyed.

The clincher, though, was this: I learned that I was actually a semi-talented writer. Writing wasn't just a new found hobby to dabble in, but an honest to God talent. Now if you were to meet me on the street, I would probably have a notebook (or several) with me. Constantly. All the time.

You know, just in case. Gotta always be ready for inspiration.

Also, because I'm a writer, I have dabbled in critiquing. I'm somewhat hesitant to critique on this site because I've found that a great big chunk of the "authors" here don't want and/or can't accept critique, and I've come across some kids who throw an online version of a temper tantrum. Now, that's their choice, of course, but I then tend to lay out for them just why exactly rejecting honest critique will get them nowhere, and that only makes them angrier.

I've actually been blocked for giving a critique before (which was insanely funny because I was almost absurdly polite considering the way the "author" had treated anyone who dared to disagree with her), so I've pretty much stopped critiquing on Gaia. It's just not worth the trouble from the kids who only want pats on the back for their...talent.
Also, formatting. Formatting is so simple on this site, and yet I continually see people who use bright, unreadable font, or make it so small, you have to squint, or they don't bother putting spaces between the paragrapsh, or--horror of horrors--they center their text. Or, hell, like one person I could name, they manage to use more than one of these formatting nightmares. Really, it's just silly. If you want people to read and review, take the time to make it legible. It's kind of a common courtesy, and a failure to do so is either laziness or arrogance.

Anyway, aside from being a writer, I'm also a Christian, a political moderate leaning towards liberal, pretty open-minded, and easily irritated by stupidity and close-mindedness. That said, if anyone comes across me being either stupid or close-minded (or both!), call me on it. Because another thing I can't stand is hypocrisy, especially in myself.
