Grandpa used to believe in spirit dogs. It was kind of like a Grim. If you went out in the jungle at night and saw a dog you were going to die soon, but light kept the spirit dogs away.
The girl is wearing traditional clothes for a dancer. The flames are inspired by a dance I remember seeing as a child where the dancers balanced candles on their heads and each hand. The flowers are the national flower of the Philippines, Sampaguita.
