now you've done it

cold pain shot through him as his palms and knees violently met the floor of the cave. he felt sick, an unreal nausea churning in the pit of his stomach. why had he gone there again? the nagging at the back of his mind lead him there, like a mosquito in his ear, ushering him to the little place that had grown so unfamiliar.

something rose in his throat, something he couldn't hold back, something that... now coated the ground, the sound of splatters reverberating off the jagged walls. his tongue had only a moment to register the sour aftertaste before another heave shook his body, the puddle below his face steadily growing.

finally, the illness seemed to fade. tiny droplets fell from his chin, creating ripples on the surface of the miniature off-white pond. it looked as though he'd vomited a carton of rotten milk, tiny yellowish objects breaking up the mostly uniform liquid. at first he mistook them for simple chunks of half-digested food, though when they began to squirm and move, he was prompted to examine them closer.

larvae, almost like maggots but a tad larger... he had just thrown up newborn insects. something was wrong. this was bad. he should have gotten up, should have screamed, should have run out as fast as he could. he should have at least registered that what had happened was not normal.

so then why could he only stare down and see his own children in that puddle?
