First bit of my novel. Put here for reference purposes.


As I was falling, I looked down into my destiny. Then I thought about my family, how important they were to me. The shrinking figures I saw, I will never forget. My son, gasping for breath, still clutching his broken sword. My darling wife at swordpoint, calling my name as she looked into the merciless eyes of our murderer. Argent. The monster himself, with a triumphant grin on his face, tasting victory at last. The last scene I would ever see. I cried out once more before the world ended. At least, it ended for me.
But the black void of nothingness I expected did not come. Instead, there was an unbearable pain that built until I cried out in agony. As suddenly as it came, it stopped. I began to feel my strength come back. I leapt up and out of the circle of people around me, ripping them away. Then I ran. I just kept going. Regardless of other people and the blood pouring from my wounds, I ran out of the city.
