Can anyone identify the materials used in this costume?

Hi forum,

I've got a friend who's attempting to make this costume by the 31st. For video game aficionados, you'll notice its the protagonist from Half-Life. What I wanted to know, is if any of you textile experts could possibly recommend the materials used to make this suit?

Was spray paint involved? Pardon my ignorance. I really don't know! xD

It looks like it could be pvc or some other type of latex-y fabric.

I'm not sure about spray paint though.

The undersuit looks like a really heavy jersey fabric O_o and a bit like a thin shiney neoprene (like wetsuit material). The over stuff...im not sure. It looks alot like spandex (painted with metalic spraypaint) over thin foam. But it also looks a bit like spraypainted vinyl, or as said above it could be painted stretch pvc.

Looks like wonder flex for the for the shiny armor, and sleeping padding/.foam for eberything else. ( Asking in the cosplay forum might be helpful aswell, or ask A Purple Duckie, she helps out alot with things like this.

I think I have seen that stuff in costume stores a lot.... it's a weird foam cloth stuff. The boots he's got on as well as the crinkle on one of his ankle cuffs and on the copper upper stomach bit and the inner seam on the upper leg cuff are dead giveaways for that foam stuff. It is good if you want comfort because it's semi smushy and looks hard, but its not actually hard. Unfortunately I forget completely what that stuff is called though to buy. gonk sweatdrop But you can go about and make something like it, though I've never tried this myself, here:

I'm not really sure about the metallic fabric. Possibly latex. Or perhaps he even used a metallic spray paint.

Although I'd say that the "abs" definately seemed airbrushed.


My best advice is to just mess around with some fabrics and paints, and see what you can come up with.
