It was supposed to entertain them. That's all. It wasn't designed to harm anyone. It wasn't our plan for this to happen. We didn't mean to kill anyone. We didn't mean to become murderers...
Have you ever wondered what would race through your mind if you took someone's life? Maybe you'd be calm about it. Maybe it just wouldn't matter. Or maybe, just maybe, you'd go insane with the immense amount of guilt and shame you'd feel. Maybe you'd love the sort of high it gave you. Perhaps you'd want to do it over and over and over until you were behinds bars or six feet under. For eight students, it wasn't their choice. They had no control over this sick, twisted game they were being forced to play. But was that really the truth?
Senior year was everything it had been cracked up to be. The football team was kicking major a**, stomping on every team that stood in their way of state championships. The students were passing without even having to pay attention to their abnormally simple classes. Even the parties were amazing enough to turn the class prude in a raging whore. Yes, senior year was off to a perfect start. But with Halloween just around the corner, two students came up with a sickeningly beautiful idea, a game, to be exact. Why not make this holiday one to remember?
This scheme would take place in the town's haunted house. Cliche, yes, but brilliant, nonetheless. It was the location of five murders, all brutal and torturous. No victim was found in one piece but rather several severed limbs scattered around the property. It took the police several years to put together the crime scene and catch the main suspect. But that was thirty-two years ago, and the killer was sentenced to a public hanging for his horrible deeds. All that was left of the crime was an empty, eerie house atop a hill on the far end of town. Its devastating history made it the perfect setting for the student's concoction.
It was easy to come up with candidates for the game. THE DRUGGIE, THE SLUT, THE QUARTERBACK, THE BOOKWORM, THE DEBATER, and THE EXCHANGE were all selected. It was far from a random decision to elect them as the pawns, and THE ALCOHOLIC and THE NORM were proud of their choices. They hoped that they'd make the game all the more fun.
The rules for the game were simple and to the point. Spend twenty-four hours in the house without any possession or use of a cellphone, laptop, and any other electronic device that wasn't supplied to them. The participants would have to sign a contract saying they could be recorded and broadcasted to a website that was accessible by any and everyone. Easy to follow, no?
What the students and creators of the trial didn't know was that someone planned to make this the last Halloween any of them would ever celebrate. One by one, they'd be kidnapped, tortured, and murdered until only one remained: the winner.
