Dear Gaians,

We're looking to redesign the My Gaia landing page (http://www.gaiaonline.com/mygaia/) into a page that you'd want to return back to. We're asking the question "What, if anything, could be added to the My gaia landing page to make it more fun, appealing and useful?"

We thought we'd pose the question to you to help us find the best answers. I'm starting this thread to ask anyone and everyone to give me their best ideas. Some examples are introducing news feeds, adding status messages so you can tell your friends what you're doing now, adding moods so you can use emotes to express to your friends how you're feeling, a to-do list, etc.

If you want to respond, please remember the following:
1. Please use this thread only to post ideas. Move all side conversation to alternate threads.
2. Try to be as detailed as possible about your feature. Describe all its moving pieces. If it is similar to another feature on the Web, provide a link to that feature so everyone knows what you're talking about. Be descriptive and imaginative!
3. Constructive feedback only! This is brainstorming, so if you don't like something either give constructive criticism on how it may be improved or keep it to yourself. We want to make sure everyone feels comfortable posting their thoughts, and just because you don't like something doesn't make it "wrong".

Your input is greatly appreciated by us, so we're looking forward to your considered opinions.

Could we have Channels back? I loved how easy it was to stalk my friend's post, xD.
Other than that, I'm all for this, even though it does remind me of myspace.

What I'd love to see is no white background. Period. And also, let us choose the image background from a series of gaia Collectible/Evolution Item art? I think that would be a neat way to have the My Gaia page stand out a little more.

I wouldn't do a "which user did this" kind of news feed, but perhaps a news update for new items, new evolutions.

If you had a "new items on gaia" sort of thing where you could preview the new item and then it could have a link to which shop in which you could buy it. It might help boost cash shop sales, too, since it would continue to advertise the items as long as they were in the new items section, instead of just being an announcement.

Additionally, it would be nice to have a large-size image of your avatar (like on the customize screen) and a direct link to the customization screen without passing through the inventory (if you have a large inventory sometimes the inventory screen is taxing to load).

You could also add a section that deals with your recent marketplace transactions and trades. It would be nice to be able to check all that out from one page. Another neat feature would be able to select a few items and be able to continually watch a graph of their marketplace values.

This is another feature that's somewhat related to that graph idea that you could add and work it through the My Gaia page... why not have a "My Quest" area, where you can set a goal for an item and deposit gold into the "quest" whenever you want, and when your gold in the "quest" matches the marketplace value of the item, it lets you withdraw the gold. Allow the item in the goal to be changed if the user wants, but limit the number of changes so that you can't just give up whenever you want. Maybe limit changing the quest item to once every 2 weeks?

Those are just a few of my ideas. If you need any clarified feel free to ask.

A place to track our quests? Like, a box that lets us pick an item we want to quest for. And then the box will list the item, the market value of the item, and then how much gold we have. Also, perhaps if we put items towards our quest (aka I'll trade my 100g and my kiki kitty for your angelic pendant), the box could keep track of the price of the kiki kitty to see how much we actually have towards the quest (100,100 gold, not just 100 gold).

the "Guild Spotlight" and "Cinema boxes"...it doesnt make much sense for them to be there. so i say those can be replaced by moving them to a different tab entirely.


-i like the Quest box idea.
Quest as in, your personal goals for items/artwork/petition etc, not the Gaia relate Quest, since we have that already.

-placing the "Subscriptions" together
have Threads and Journals occupy the same space, i am not sure how the coding works, but since you need to "Click All" to see the rest of what you subbed to. i think it would be possible to combine them.

-although i do stare at it when i do my DC rounds, what function does the "Mail" box serve?
i can see what is there when i actually click the mail icon at the top of the screen.

-how about My Gaia serve as the place to save your favorite outfit?
there is a petition for +++ QUICK CHANGE OUTFITS +++
best i can describe it, instead of going into the Dress Up page, all you would need to do is open up your "Dress Closet" box and change instantly.

-well, i dont know how much use it would be. since Fin already posted about the IM feature.
i was thinking the page could have a mini live chat-box, that you activate when all you friends are on, instead of going to Towns or cluttering your Comment box.

Here are my thoughts:

Facebook style news feed
  • We'd get a box that shows something along the lines of "User X has updated their avatar"; "User Y made a post on thread A"; "User Z has changed their About Me info". All these should come from friends only, of course. And everyone should be able to set up which of this notifications Gaia is allowed to send to their friends.
  • To the news feed above you could also add item news. From item releases like another user previously posted to notifications when we've been outbid on the marketplace and we could subscribe to vendings from a particular item and we would get "User C is selling Item K for 1,000G". Something like a market watch but right on our start page and only for the items we choose.
  • The "subscribed threads" would go on here aswell. We'd get notifications when there are new posts to a the thread be have subscribed. And maybe notifications specially when someone quotes us? Even if it's on a thread we have not subscribed to. In case someone quotes something we posted on a completely different forum/thread.
  • Subscribed Journals would go here.


Improvements to PM Inbox / Mail
  • E-mails could have Gmail style labels.
  • Maybe we could set a status to PMs? Something like "Important", "To-do", "Finished". Or maybe this won't be needed if we already get labels.
  • Show sent and received mails in conversation style, just like Gmail does. It's pain to have to switch between sent and received all the time just to check on an old PM conversation.


Get rid of the Guild Spotlight
  • Or at least make it feature guilds that are somewaht related to what users input on their interests.
  • Having the same Guild featured for so long is a waste of screen space


Get rid of the Cinemas box
  • It's very very not useful


Anyways... I ranted for a bit. Thing is that I kinda ended up noticing that pretty much everything I could think of could easily go on a news feed. It's be nice to have a single place were we would get notifications of all that's happening on Gaia.

And I'm a real friend of simple and to the point design. So white is fine with me.

Take out the Spotlight and Cinemas bits, as they're not useful at all, and perhaps replace them with:

Active topics in guilds
Stats on anything (posting, users, averages, fave items by quantity - anything!)
Stuff like that.

with the idea of news feed, please do not have it fully like the facebook version. some people do not want to know what other people are doing, so if you have it connected to users and their friends, please let it be customized so you can choose whether or not you want to know what your friends are up to. (sorry. facebook is just annoying to me. sweatdrop )

and with the cinema box, i think if it was updated and all of the cinema was connected (new cinema and old cinema with films and short films) it would be a lot more useful.

Take off:
- Mail- It's kind of redundant to have it, I barely use this. When I have new mail I just click the Alert bubble (or the small link up by Shortcuts).
- Spotlights on Cinema and Guilds. I haven't ever used this.

Change:
- Make the Subscriptions into one area where you can click tabs to change it between S.Threads and S.Journals.

Suggestions:
- Something that shows if somebody replied to a Thread you made or a Post you made-- like the Subscriptions suggestion above, this would be a tabbed feature to switch between the two options.
- An item tracker that tracks the price of a few specific items you select.
- Something that shows which Guilds you belong to have new posts, and how many new posts.

Some kind of page customization, like the Channels, would be nice. That way people could pick and choose which options are where -- even to be able to move certain features to the top and "hide" others would be nice.

I also like the idea of having a Facebook-like news feed. That could actually condense many features into one.

I like the whole "moods" and "status" messaging. I'm constantly having to change my signature to represent how i feel, and i think if i had a mood/status message it'd be much much faster.

Also, maybe have a feature where we can add or remove certain boxes, or move them around to where we would like them to be. Customization is everywhere nowadays.

A customizable status message is very handy. And let us choose our own My Gaia page by introducing a new Gaia Channel. heart

If nothing else, switch the guild spotlight and the Mail boxes with one another. Reason being the flashy interesting graphics are better placed in the center, and Leon's lovely face is colorful and bright. It attracts attention.


But, maybe the top center box could be customizable for users? :3 I know that if I had something personal to look at, I might linger longer on the my Gaia page. ^_^- Like, maybe I could leave a little blurb about my latest quest, or remind myself about something I need to do, or digitally hit myself over the head for doing something stupid... That way, it really makes it 'my Gaia'. :3 It'd be great if such a box was BBcode enabled.

In order to give space for this, maybe move the cinemas box? It's not really a 'my gaia' thing, anyways. ^_^'
