In light of recent events with the glitched game items, we wanted to address some additional issues and concerns and provide some more information about this situation. And again, we apologize for all the chaos and confusion that this glitch has caused.

What are glitched items?
Glitched items are items obtained through trades affected by faulty script: the items themselves (bugs, inks, fish, bait, tokens, tickets, trash, flowers, etc.), and items that were bought using profits from these glitches (Prize & Joy items bought with glitched tickets, fish hats exchanged for glitched fish, gold earned through selling glitched bait back to the store, items bought with gold earned from glitched items, etc.)

How do glitched items get in my inventory?
There was a bug in a script that brought back the trades that were left open before we converted to the new system.

What should I do if I have glitched items in my inventory?
1. Respond to this thread by listing all the glitched items, please include item name(s) and quantities.
2. We're opening a “Gaia Glitched Items Amnesty Program” whereby you can report any and all items that are in your inventory that do not belong to you. Click here for a definition of amnesty.
3. If you find glitched items in your inventory, please leave them there. Do not sell or trade these items.

How do I return glitched items?
We will remove the items from your inventory ourselves. All you have to do is report the items in this thread, please include item name(s) and quantities.

Does the “Gaia Glitched Items Amnesty Program” only apply to game items?
No, this program applies to any glitched items that have showed up in your inventory.

Will I be banned for participating in the Amnesty Program?
No, as mentioned above, you may return items that do not belong to you without consequence.

I hacked my friend, and now I have his Ancient Katana. This Ancient Katana is now in my inventory, but does not rightfully belong to me. W00t! I can get an amnesty for it, right?
No, this program is only for glitched items. Hacking violates our Terms of Service and when you’re caught, you will be dealt with accordingly.

What happens to those who do not participate in the program?
Anyone who does not report their glitched items is violating Gaia’s Terms of Service and when you’re caught, you will be dealt with accordingly.

Will this program ever end?
Yes, please report all glitched items by August 18, 2008.

We are working hard to restore all the glitched items back to normal and you can help us by stepping forward and participating in the Amnesty Program mentioned above.

I'm nervous about using the Marketplace right now. Is it safe?

You are free to buy and sell any non-game items in the Marketplace. It's business as usual.

What's going to happen to the Gaia economy now that huge quantities of game items (and related items) have been bought and sold?
We are working to restore the economy back to the state it was prior to the game item glitch. By recovering all the glitched items out of everyone's inventories and removing them from the Market, everything should go back to normal soon. We will be monitoring the total amounts of items removed, and may take further actions in the near future to correct for this glitch’s effects.

Please respond by August 18, 2008.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please post them in this thread.

More information -- please read:

My apologies for not posting more info sooner. I've been pouring through everyone's questions in this thread and others and have attempted to address them here. If I missed any questions that were posted prior to about noon, July 21, 2008, please let me know. If any came in after that, I just haven't reviewed them yet, but I will get to them.

This glitch affected several hundred users and there are a few hundred that remain banned as we work to resolve the issues. We're reviewing each case individually. Items are being removed from accounts, in some cases gold is being restored and things are being put back to the way the were prior to the glitch. While most users involved in the glitch will be unbanned, some users will remain banned due to gross exploitation of the glitch. Gross exploitation (for example) in some cases means that a user sat at their computer for 12 hours trading, selling and moving glitched items into 10 mule accounts. An example of non-gross exploitation might be someone who purchased 500 inks for 3 gold -- it's a great deal and should have been questioned, but it's not a gross exploitation. In addition, most of the people's who's trades/Marketplace were disabled will be re-enabled, but again each case will be reviewed individually.

Regardless of whether you exploited the glitch knowingly or unknowingly, we're concerned with the activity level of the trades, sells and buys as mentioned above. Let me give you a bank analogy --- if a bank mistakenly deposited $147 million dollars into your account and your ran out and bought a house and a car, you would have to surrender the house, the car, and the money. Whether there were consequences to follow would be determined based on your actions and resolution of the problem. While in this situation, we're not referring to real life items/money, we are talking about things that affect the Gaia economy and the community at large.

If you're questing and/or saving up for a big item, think about how unfair it is for someone who has grossly exploited the glitch, "earned" 55 million gold as a result of the glitch, bought many items equivalent or equal to what you're questing for and you still can't can't afford it. In the meantime, because they've pushed so many of these items into the market, the once valuable items that you've been questing for will no longer be as valuable.

The Amnesty program was not created to make anyone feel guilty, it was simply created to give everyone an opportunity to step forward to report the activities involved with the glitch.

The lesson: if something like this ever happens again, whether site-wide or to you individually, please don't touch the items.Report it/them immediately. We don't want you to feel guilty, we just want you to report it so we can fix it. By doing this, you help us, yourself, and your community.

Fielding user questions...(in the order received)

If I bought glitched items before the announcement/before I knew they were glitched, will I be banned?
Each case is being investigated individually. Whether you knew if the items were glitched or not is not a factor in this equation. What matters is if the account in question grossly exploited the glitched items. If an account has not been banned already, it is highly likely that it will not be banned after the fact.

If I unknowingly received glitched items from a friend before the announcement/before I knew they were glitched, will I be banned?
See answer above.

If I bought and sold glitched game items before the announcement/before I knew they were glitched, will I be banned?
See answer above.

If I won't be banned for buying, will the items disappear? Will I get a refund?
The items will very likely disappear and depending on the situation, it is likely that the gold will not be refunded. Again, this will be analyzed on a case-by-case basis.

If I won't be banned for receiving a trade, will the items disappear?
More than likely, the items will disappear.

If I won't be banned for buying/selling, will a rollback for my account happen?
A rollback will not happen, instead we have a team restoring items manually and they are doing their best to restore everything to the state they were prior to the glitch.

When are trading/vending passes going to be restored? **

Trading/vending passes are being restored as each account is cleaned up. It will not be a mass restore, as the only accounts that currently do not have trades/vends are those that are somehow directly involved in the game items glitch. It will probably take a couple/few weeks to clean up all the accounts since they have to be done manually.

Is there a time frame for when the modbase and the admin hope to have this matter taken care of? **
It will probably take a couple/few weeks to clean up all the accounts since they have to be done manually.

Is it possible to tell the difference between glitched and non-glitched game items? **
At the time of the glitch, there were several hundred game item trades in progress. Let's say a trade was originally 500 tickets, due to the glitch the 500 tickets became 100+ million tickets. We have record of all the accounts that were involved in these pending trades. From there, we can see where all the glitched game items went, whether it was to another user, sold back to stores, sold in the MarketPlace, etc. So, unless you were involved in one of those trades or if you happened to buy a rather huge amount of game items (usually at a really competitive price), you would know if you have glitched game items. Otherwise, our team can and has tracked where these items have moved, so we know where the glitched game items are and who has them, etc.

I just want to know if it's safe to be buying again. I'm buying ink, but I'm avoiding any really good deals out of fear still.
All the accounts that were involved in the glitch had their trades/vends canceled. Doing this, removed their items from the Marketplace. In essence, it should be safe, but use your judgment...if it seems too good to be true, then err on the side of caution and don't buy (just to be safe).

What I really want to know is what is working, what is safe to use at this point (marketplace, trading?), what I shouldn't go into (fishing?), etc.

Everything should be safe at this time. As I mentioned in the answer above, just err on the side of caution if something doesn't look right. Ex. 1 million inks should not cost only 100 gold. Fishing is working for most people, but we have reports that some people are experiencing issues with rods and bait and we're working on this as well.

Sad thing is, if you and I were to shop at a store...And we were unpleased, we'd take our business elsewhere. It doesn't effect gaia if we leave, so they don't bloody care.
Your (Gaians) dissatisfaction absolutely matters to us, which is why we're spending several weeks of people power/time to manually restore all the items involved in this glitch and restore things back to the way they were prior to the glitch. This affected several hundred users and affected the Gaia economy and we don't want the game items to lose value in the Marketplace, etc. We care if you leave...Gaia isn't a viable community without its users. Without you, there wouldn't be a Gaia. So please understand that this greatly affects us as a company and as an online community. We are doing everything we can to correct this issue and bring everything back to normal (pre-glitch), it just takes time to correct.

Does the glitch Amnesty Program apply to banned users?
Yes, it does. Anyone who has been banned due to the game items glitch is more than welcome to reply to the thread. Be sure to name the account that was banned along with the item names and quantities. There is no need to post stories/reasons along with this, just the facts are fine.

I believe that Gaia needs to clear the confusion and tell us what they're doing, how they're handling it, what exactly we should do about game items currently (whether glitched or not), and how long it should generally take for the whole mess to be fixed up.

Right now, we are manually cleaning up accounts involved in the game glitch items and removing the glitched items. In some cases, gold is being restored as well, but this is determined on a case-by-case basis. Do not touch glitched items, please leave them in your account. It will likely take 2-3 weeks to restore the accounts.

How will I know? Will they disappear? If so, will I get the gold I paid for them back? Can I continue to buy and sell inks in the mean time?
If you account was involved in the glitch, the account was either banned or trades/vends were disabled (after the game items glitch, of course). The glitched items will be removed from the account and you will be notified that your account has been restored/unbanned, etc. In most cases, gold will not be refunded, but it will be determined on a case-by-case basis. If you have your trade/vend pass in place, you may buy and sell inks, but (and I've said this before) err on the side of caution, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is.

I highly resent the fact that it is implied that we did something wrong.

While this is not a question, I wanted to address the statement. Our intention was not to imply that anyone did anything wrong. We banned many accounts and disabled trades/vends in order to stop ALL trades, sales and other movement of glitched game items from moving further than they already had once we realized the magnitude of this glitch. In terms of creating the Amnesty Program, the intention was not to imply guilt on the part of the user, but rather create a forum where everyone could step forward to redeem themselves from this event. Some people were buying/selling/trading glitched items at a phenomenal rate and some people were not. This allows everyone to turn over (speak up about) their items in a no questions asked manner. We do not need or require reasons for the glitched items. The whole thing was a big screw up and we own up to that. All we ask is that you own up to actually having the items.

Also, are water balloons consider to be game item too?
Yes, water balloons are game items.

Why didn't you just close the market?

We disabled trading site-wide as soon as we learned the magnitude of the glitch. Closing the Marketplace wasn't really an option, so instead we opted to disable trades/vend for all accounts involved with the glitch.

"From Sagger's Journal"

Why do we ban the users who have exploited the glitch?
There are several reasons we need to ban people who have tried (and even succeeded, temporarily) to exploit this glitch.

1. It makes us work harder when glitches occur. If people try to exploit them instead of reporting them immediately, it takes us longer to find them out, and then it's harder to contain and fix. We have to keep in mind that glitches will always happen, regardless of the amount of effort we put into preventing them. If we ban those who tried to exploit the glitch this time, people will report it faster the next time, and more people will refrain from exploiting it.

2. Had we not banned glitch exploiters, we would be sending a very bad message to the community; that breaking the rules is ok sometimes. We just can't do that - we put a lot of effort into making Gaia a great place to hang out, and the Rules help us to do that.

We take no pleasure in banning users. But it's something we have to do sometimes. crying

I hope this helps alleviate your concerns. Please do not stress about what will/might happen to your account. We are doing everything that we can to be fair and to restore things back to normal. We really appreciate your patience while we deal with this issue.

Update as of Tuesday, August 5, 2008

Great news! The team is approximately 75% done with cleaning up the game item glitch mess.

It seems that the remaining 25% (give or take) of the clean up are the bigger, messier accounts which require a huge amount of research and clean up. So, bear with us while we work through everything. Please keep in mind, this does not only involve clearing items out of the account that received all the glitched items, but also clearing the glitched items out of many mule accounts, accounts that were gifted/traded items, as well as accounts that bought/sold items. For example, an account that received glitched items may have moved items to 30 different accounts by the various means previously mentioned. That's a lot of accounts to clean up in order to clear one person's account, right?

We're *hoping* this will be complete in about 2 more weeks. It's hard to guesstimate because we don't know the extent of the work needed until each account is reviewed. We appreciate your continued patience and your understanding while we finish the clean up process.

Thank you for this update. I do have another question. I bought 500 inks on Monday night, before we heard about this glitch. Because the market price dropped right after that, I am concerned that they might have been glitched items. I haven't done anything with them while waiting for the glitch to be resolved. How will I know? Will they disappear? If so, will I get the gold I paid for them back? Can I continue to buy and sell inks in the mean time?

Thank you.

Dilute. Dilute! OK!!

I do not appreciate the suggestion that we've done someting wrong, when it was your scripts that screwed up.

The word you use suggest this is a program to forgive us for the glictched item when the glitch that gives us the item is your fault.

I have one glitched Berry Tavern Wench's Bustier. I got it sometime after you guys screwed up the inventory.

Give me avvi art, pl0x.

I'm not sure if my items are glitched. I have 144513240 white daisies, but I got them in a trade with a girl named sorayren before you amended your statement stating all game items could be glitched. I figured she had them left after a quest or something. Anyhow, I do believe that those are the only thing that may be glitched. Most of the ink the I bought and sold on the marketplace seemed legit. I don't think it's right though to punish those that got traded the glitched items, when you can't really tell if it's glitched or not.

I bought full body skin dyes and I worry that they were made with glitched inks or glitched bugs. I am voicing my activity so it does not seem that I am trying to hide anything. I was also given a few skins from friends who knew I was questing for them. So what do I do? I've not abused a glitch but I'm worried that those that did will indirectly cause me problems.

I take all unwanted items!
I bought about 200 blue inks, then I sold the first hundred and bought 500 inks before I even knew that they were glitched. I made a blue full body skin dye with them and I still have the other hundred blue inks, what do I do with those, are they gonna be removed?

I bought 1000 black inks and sold 60 for about 20k ~
I bought 600 blue bass they still are in my inventory

I didn't know they could be glitched it was before the annoucement... Then there had been an announcement about fishes, I put them off my store, the fishes and the ink. They are still in my inventory and I didn't used the gold gained with the inks.

Cutie lollie
I bought some full dyes / skins on the Marketplace that day (red, blue, pink, purple, black, white) and some Inks (Gold & Brown).

I do not know whether the inks and skins were glitched or not, I assumed when I bought them that due to the natural progression of the prices they were priced fairly (there was a chain of prices 200k, 150k, 100k, 90k, 80k etc.) I also do not know if the inks were glitched, they were being sold in batches at fairly reasonable (but not unrealistic) prices and I assumed that Gold / Brown inks were not popular due to the lack of body dye.

I also only saw the announcement when it said Fishes (This was later, and sneakily in my opinion) changed to encompass all Game Items. I think Gaia should have made a separate announcement about their realisation that this was all Game Items, instead of including an Asterisk at the bottom of the page.
I really liked the skins, I was thrilled to get my dream skins, now I'm scared for my account and saddened that this whole thing happened.
I think for future reference Gaia should also consider closing the MP the moment they realise there is a glitch, just to protect us innocent users who now fear the ban-hammer.

Either way I'm just voicing my MP activity for that day, I don't want to be banned because of Gaia's glitches. sad

EDIT

I am APAULED that Gaia are going to take items THAT I PAID FOR FAIR AND SQUARE WITH MY OWN GOLD away and are NOT going to REFUND me the gold I used (unless I'm lucky enough to be one of the 'case by case' examples rolleyes ). I used some of my Gaia Cash to buy Sealeds to sell in order to buy some of those skins due to the fact they were still 100k+
I think it's DISGRACEFUL that Gaia is going to rip me off in this way! neutral If Gaia had been truly concerned with ensuring that the glitch was contained then they would have closed ALL methods of TRADE on the site (Marketplace, Trades, Gift Giving). Instead they ALLOWED users to purchase goods from the Marketplace without knowing whether they were glitched or not.

I bought 3 skin dyes, pink, green, and blue from the market place hours before the announcement.
Will I be getting my gold back from that?

Oh I just noticed something,I bought the silver revolver way before the glitch item happened and when I hold it in a certain position it looks like I am holding two in one hand. I only have one in my inventory so I don't know whats going on with that glitch.

I see two in one hand.
Back to one.

Edit:Thank you for making an announcement.

Well, in regards to my account that was banned (tenthdivisioncaptain) I thought that I had won something big on daily chance, attaining 147mil tickets. I thought I had just overlooked it, and so I spent them. It was only later that I realized that this was in fact a glitch due to the announcement. It was too late to do anything; after the announcement I did stop using items for profit. Would it be possible to simply remove all of my items following the start of my ticket spending on that account, as well the tickets and my gold? I had many good friends there I cannot contact now...I think this seems like a reasonable request; I did not know what was happening and stopped when I did; I don't think I should have been banned without a warning. I would simply like the mentioned items taken away, pleeease? sad

I bought a lot of red inks from someone named Yuu something, off the MP. I also bought some inks off of someone else. I do not know the full amount, because I sold some of the inks after buying. I didn't know a glitch was going on. I bought and sold the items before the announcement.

Side Note:
How come this hasn't been put into an announcement? I never come into this forum; I only came because I had an item suggestion. Lord knows not every user who bought glitched items is going to come in here and report their items by the 18th of August, and they'll be banned.

Also; There were mods in the Q&A the other day, saying that if you bought glitched items off of the MP and didn't glitch items yourself, you could keep the glitched items that were honestly bought and not be banned. Is this still true?
