*sigh* why can't we just let this stupid thread float off the main page? sweatdrop

because if it did, another one just like it would pop up within the week. The shear number of post and the pages of beat down against anti-evolution arguments acts as a quick refresher to think their opinion over for a second. May not stop all posters, but probably stopped a few. I haven't even hear sound a pro-creationist one yet, as all they seem to do is think if evolution is disproved, creation must be the way it happened.

Oh gosh, evolution is my favorite topic ever. biggrin (I am not joking)

I haven't read the entire thread, but did you guys know that there is some evidence that the lineage of chimpanzees/bonobos and humans could have separated via a chromosome mutation?? I would link something explaining it, but I think that would be above the general genetic technical knowledge around here. It's really interesting because a chromosome change like that would probably have been extremely sudden - that is, the offspring who inherited the mutation would immediately be unable to reproduce with the rest, as far as what I know about this.

http://www.5min.com/Video/How-Chimp-Chromosome-13-Proves-Evolution-11049 - Video about it, although it's less scientific and more political/religious than I'd like to see.

Also, other cool things: http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/05/19/human.ancestor/index.html - An article about a fossil presumed to be the ancestor of apes/monkeys/lemurs, humans included of course.

Mostly because if you do a worse thread will come along but as long as this one stays afloat it keeps most of the others at bay.

Number of chromosomes isn't a significant barrier to reproduction. The common mouse has between 12 and 40 chromosomes if I recall.

The thing that needs to happen is that the chromosomes need to be able o line up, and if you cleaved one in half those halves still line up with the "whole" one just fine.

Oh God I was just thinking about this song the other day. sweatdrop

If I remember correctly, it was from a show called Lamb Chop in the 80's involving various anthropomorphic puppets, the main one being a sheep thing (hence the show's title). They'd sing it at the end before Sherry (?) would cover the stupid sheep's mouth. Then someone else would start singing. I hated it.

You are ignorant or a troll. Clearly, no concept of biology.

We did not evolve from monkeys

we and monkeys evolved from a common ancestor. A primitive hominid, if you will.
If it was around today we'd call it a monkey.

*We're basically never going to hear the end of this one. You'd have go door to door educating everyone old enough to speak to stand a chance at getting people to stop saying that so you'd better get used to it or resolve to just be permanently frustrated.
And besides, if you wanna be picky our lineage didn't branch off from a monkey ancestor- "WE" evolved from a primitive ape, but like I said there's no point fussing over that.

If you wanted to be picky, we are paraphyletic to monkeys, we really should be considered monkey as apes branched off from old world monkeys after old world monkeys and new world monkeys branched off, so ape should be a subset of old world monkeys, meaning apes are monkeys, we just don't like to admit it.

If anyone disagrees with anything I say, I am quite prepared not only to retract it, but also to deny under oath that I ever said it.

true I guess, though if you look at it that way, You could call your parakeet a dinosaur and be correct, since it did evolve from them and still retains many similar aspects such as bone design. Well...emu at least...
Classifications do come in handy some times too, you know. Though yes, it seem most people just find it distasteful to be called an ape or monkey on some sort of principle rather then understanding that different classifications may be called for and when.
