Disillusioned words like bullets bark as humans gods aim for their mark make everyting from toy guns that spark to flesh-colored christs that glow in the dark, its easy to see without looking too far that not much is really sacred.

why not focus on finding ways of preventing it, rather then curing it?

Of course will find a cure, and then another disease or whatever will take it's place. This cycle has been going on for centuries or even since the begining of time. When will we find a cure or even become immune to it, I cannot say.

I'm pretty sure if we made smoking illegal, like we should've done 400 years ago, the deaths from cancer would drop dramatically.

Smoking aint the only thing that causes cancer. Actually pretty much anything we use today can cause cancer even if its only a small chance.

Of course, but smoking kills over 400,000 (~440k) people every year in the U.S. which isn't exactly a speck of the population.

I think eventually there will be a cure for cancer, perhaps more of a method of prevention at best.

I would say this cure would take some genetic engineering, as cancer comes from an 'error' in replication, is it not? I don't see why there wouldn't be a cure if genetic engineering continues to progress. smile

That's all speculation, but it's interesting to think about.

They may create a cure, but will it be safe?? Cancer are living cells in the body, a majority of the time when cancer patients receive KemoRadiation Therapy, it doesn't only kill the cancer cells, it kills the healthy cells too. They may find a cure, but will this "Cure" kill a cancer victim in the process.

well cancer is in my jean pool and hopefully there will be a cure for it i havent gotten tested yet for it im only 13 and i hope it skipped my mom but she has lots of health problems like mentally she is bipolar and adhd and diabetic and many others i hope that they find a cure but so far with the studies they have done they aren't that far into a cure so it might not ever happen

What is it that you call a cure? A chimio already is, in a way, a cure.

Well, it might be possible to find something to prevent cancer. As you may know cancer is due to a bad replication of the genom of the cell, which is normally repaired by several intra cellular systems. However, it happens that, sometimes, all these systems are ineffective. Then, either the cell is destructed, either it is not...

So, maybe it is possible to lower the risk of dysfunctionment of the repairing systems, but a "cure" seems complicated, given it must focus on tumoral cells.

(P.S : excuse me if I used some unproper terms, or if it isn't clear, but english isn't my mother tongue)

No, it's fine. What would be good is if we had a med that restores the proper gene functions without affecting other cells, or a vaccine that strengthens the "executioner" function so that the mutation can't override the apoptosis. Basically, something that either restores the functions or makes sure that the cancerous cells die, without affecting the other cells. Or maybe just whip up a special antigen that bonds to the defective cells and let the immune system go at them.

Actually there is a lot of current research into chemopreventive measures that would prevent cancer, but there's not much that's come out of it yet. A lot of studies have been conflicted about whether a certain compound is useful or not. General studies of consumption of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have given results that range from having a preventive effect, to no effect, to actually increasing cancer risk. The research is being done, but it's just as difficult as coming up with better drugs to cure cancer.
