TBLISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Georgia's president said Friday that his country is under attack by Russian tanks and warplanes, and he accused Russia of targeting civilians as tensions over the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia appeared to boil over into full-blown conflict.

Russia's Channel 1 shows heavy tanks purported to be on their way to South Ossetia.

1 of 2 "All day today, they've been bombing Georgia from numerous warplanes and specifically targeting (the) civilian population, and we have scores of wounded and dead among (the) civilian population all around the country," President Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN in an exclusive interview.

"This is the worst nightmare one can encounter," he said.

Asked whether Georgia and Russia were now at war, he said, "My country is in self-defense against Russian aggression. Russian troops invaded Georgia." Watch the interview with Saakashvili »

About 150 Russian armored vehicles have entered South Ossetia, Saakashvili said, and Georgian forces had shot down two Russian aircraft.

Rassia has invaded the former Soviet republic Georgia. Georgia has been getting cuddly with NATO and the EU and obviously this has made Russia uncomfortable, but to openly invade the country? How do you guys think this will play out? Will the Russians topple the Georgian government in favor of a pro Moscow puppet? Will America, the EU, or NATO get involved? What does this mean for the region or the world for that matter.

Please discuss.

The s**t hits the fan and WW3 possibly looms in the distance.
I doubt the US Will get involved into a confrontation with the Russians. Nuclear Winter doesn't seem that appealing.

I dunno we have been pushing real hard to get them in NATO and we actually have personel training and advising Georgian military personel. Never mind that if America turns its back on Georgia what kind of mesage would that send to our allies and those who wish to be our allies?

The same kind of message that's sent that we don't do any god damn thing for Darfur simply because we don't want to piss off the Chinese?

With that in mind, It's clear we're heading towards WW3 here soon. I highly doubt we'll do anything about Georgia; The people are tired of the war on terror, and fighting a proxy war with Russia would only cause more hardships. America will be a rising dragon once again once we get hit on the home front. I'm not advocating that we should, just stating a fact that the America people generally won't do a damn thing till we're actually hit: And the Government won't do a thing till we're hit as well. It's why we've stayed out of Darfur, much to my bitter hatred towards their lack of wanting to protect other weaker countries.

Hell, we should have been in Lebanon and kicked Hezbollah out already as well. If this does hit WW3, we're going to have a huge plate of s**t to dig into.

I was expecting something like this to happen ever since we helped Kosovo get independent status. Russia basically said that if we let Kosovo break away from Serbia that they would f**k with Georgia, I'm just surprised that it happened so quickly.

Well Considering we are tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan I'd say we will be hard pressed to do much in the mean time. Isreal has a very sophisticated military and a long history of fighting inusrgents and they couldn't uproot Hezbollah. I am not so sure we'ed have any better luck.

Hezbollah is heavily entrenched in Lebanon not only militarily, (Its believed they have a significant tunnel network that would allow them to concduct tunnel warfare) but socially becuase it provides security and many basic services to impovershed shi'ite neighborhoods.

I think Hezbollah can be best discribed as an unsual shrattenal injury. They have put themselves in such a position that while they aren't good for Lebanon they have become an essential service provider so while the shrattenel is uncomfortable leaving it in will not exactly spell death for the patient. If you try to rip them out it only harms the patient even more case in point The war between Hezbollah and Israel not long ago.

As for Darfur i think it is less about pissing of the Chinese and more about the fact it is just another African country nobody really cares about.

With Poland wanting a missile system in their country and the Czech Republic getting one built, it is no surprise.

I believe that Russian threatened Poland with military action.

Why are things as they are and not otherwise?

When ships to sail the void between the stars have been invented, there will also be men who come forward to sail those ships.
There won't be any WW3. Like if Russia could stand up to america at the moment... not a chance. All they got going right now is the size of there land, but we have a higher population and a better trained military. If things would get rough we could resort to having a draft too and thats it, manpower issue done.

I don't think anything is going to happend, Nato should send an Ultimatum though.

NATO? NATO is a joke... should change their name to Never Accomplished The Objectives. Not to mention their behavior of sex for food.

Can't elaborate much as I'm on other forums discussing this but....

Well South Ossetians and Ossetians in general, Abkhazia, Adjara, accept the Russian military in their states
now why the Russians used military force is because recently Georgians have launched offensive on these break-away regions
- in which they claim as establishing civil control; then in an interview with CNN claimed that Russia launched APCs in which they needed to use artillery fire.

Yay Russia!

No, and you're an idiot. Learn the history and context of a conflict before discussing it.

Read about South Ossetia and come back later.

Bingo.

Either way, it's a bad sign.

NATO a joke? ARe you kidding me? Who else was fighting in Afghanistan while we were eating s**t in Iraq?
Who resolved the Yugoslav war?

Exactly.

I think you have NATO confused with UN forces.

NATO is not a joke, is no wonder Puttin is pissed off Georgia is aiming to join it.
Is one of the reasons we ar ein this situation in the first place.

That's Georgian land to me. Russia has no business sending military forces there, din't they do enough by supporting the guerillas? Which in Israeli train of thought is a declaration of war. South Ossetia is recognized as Georgian territory and there has being talks of an autonamous state, however Russia has no business intruding in what is recognized as part of Georgias sovereign territory.
