haha after reading through some of these posts, i'm beginning to wonder if i'm the only one who likes Gackt's music purely for the composition of it. He's actually a really talented composer whose music makes a lot of sense (musically that is. lyrically, he's pretty redundant ^_^). When I first heard his music, my initial thought was: wow this guy's vibrato is annoying. However, the music itself was so good that I had to listen to more songs. it took some time to get used to each one of his individual albums because the style changes so much (which is another reason why i like it) but, just by listening to his music, you can tell he grew up around classical music and used to play in an orchestra. i thought he'd be pretty interesting (musicians are all weird, right?) so i read his autobiography. I now understand his style a little more, and it's true, he's a rather interesting person, however, I don't recommend Jihaku (: Gackt's a weirdo.
I'd have to agree with you on some points but not on others~
Yes, Gackt tends to get redundant with his lyrics ("dakishimete" being the most used word in all his songs. >_____<; lol.), but there are other songs -- Ghost, Koakuma Heaven, Dybbuk and Death Wish as examples -- that are quite different. Of course, many of the themes are the same (ie. connecting Crescent and Moon, half of the songs on there are love-related~), but the lyrics do vary from time to time. And on top of that, he uses symbolism~ A lot of symbolism. Redemption, for example. The birds in the PV aren't actually just random birds. xD Each one symbolizes something that fits the theme of the song.
So yes, his composition is extraordinary, but I wouldn't necessarily say his lyrics are redundant.
And I've read Jihaku, but I don't believe it truly applies to him now as it did 6 years ago~ ^ ^;
I haven't been keeping up with Gackt that much. How come Jihaku doesn't fit him anymore?
I would say mostly because of his relationship with Ogata Ken back in 2007, who he said he considered as a mentor and someone who changed his view on a lot of things~ ...Though Ogata Ken passed away a year ago...so...
On top of that he just smiles a lot more than he did before. > -- <
Yes, that is definitely true. One thing I like about the lyrics to his music is the symbolism, but it always seems to me that he uses similar metaphors each time. however, he tells very romantic stories, which I like. And yes, I love his conception albums, The Moon Project is great, and I do consider that and how his lyrics have changed recently. I love all of Gackt's PVs, too. His are the best when it comes to visually telling stories, and actually using plots and symbolism in the video ^_^ I was referring to the actual words themselves (probably should have said that in the first place), not the meanings, sorry (: I used to only pay attention to the meanings of the words, then someone pointed out the "dakishimete" over-usage to me (still mad at said person), and it's become annoying that I chose focus on the actual music (I'm a music major and really in to analyzing mood and meaning strictly by the instrumentals, which is why I love Gackt, because you can construe his emotions through the instrumentals alone) Either way, officially done with my justification. Once again, sorry if i've offended people who love the lyrics to Gackt's music ^.^
