How is surrendering of the body more offensive than extinguishing a life?

I recently had a short debate regarding the movie "Irreversible", a very psycho-violent French flick starring Monica Bellucci ending with her raped for 20 minutes. (Yeah, they showed it).

More comments leaned towards how awful the idea. The morality. That viewers walked out of the theater once anticipating the scene. I wasn't moved.

I raised that we can sit through mind-numbing hours of murders & suicides. Shot up, cut up, strangled, burned alive, you name it. It's in our screens & literature. Saw's a big hit; on the 6th movie, right? That's cool & encouraged! A violent act leading to murder can be simulated & witnessed without controversy. Why not rape? Murder lost its seriousness. I would think they'd be of equal concern.

My take? I don't think it's a moral issue- that would encourage a double-standard. I plainly believe we're used to it. Violence appears more than sex on screen maybe? Perhaps we need as frequent rape scenes to grow accustomed.

You tell me.

The only valid censorship of ideas is the right of people not to listen.

First of all Irreversible is a brilliant movie.

Secondly. Because rape is a more taboo subject. It permanently scars people emotionally unlike murder because, well, your dead.

PS: If you think Irreversible is bad check out Audition or Begotten.

So to make the two equal you're suggesting there be more rape scenes as opposed to cutting down on violent scenes? Do you want people to be number or more sensitive to these issues?

I personally would rather be killed.

At least then I wouldn't have to live with it... seeing as I'd be, uh, dead. No consciousness, dark void, and all that.

Wouldn't it suck that if after death you replayed how you died over and over?

So you would rather miss out on 60 some odd years of your life for 1 very traumitcal Moment?

What about if you were killed but raped first? Still want to be killed? Or will you do me the favor and not lie to me and say you want to live this time.

Ahh, nah. I am not nearly as terrified of death as I am of rape. If I had consciousness after I died, it wouldn't bother me to see how I died, be it by disease, murder or falling off a bridge. I will die eventually, and I'm alright with that.

Note to self: If self decides to commit suicide, make sure it involves hookers, haribo and strip blackjack.

Actually, forget the blackjack and hold the strip.

No, the topic is would I rather be killed or raped. I would rather be killed. And since you asked "What if I was raped then killed?", I would be dead, so.

Meh, at least I would have death to welcome me. =/ That would be a rather shitty way to die though. Ah well.

~Then why did I find some morning wood, my shirt rather wet, and a fresh breeze ?

Within ten minutes of posting this as my sig pic I received a total of twelve PMs as to WHY this is in my sig. I'm from here, this is my block. Enough already!!!
My reasons:

*Rape is showed less in all media productions, thus the viewer being less used to it, causing a larger outrage.

*Rape is usually (don't start calling me sexist- you know it's true) a man raping a woman. Most of the time. Now I'm not saying that the movie itself is sexist, but woman are (once again, overall, this is true) considered by society to be the weaker sex. It's been that way for generations. So, by a scene of a man raping a woman, it's not only awkward- but considered politically incorrect. So... it's kind of "worse" in that aspect. Because killing someone isn't as politically incorrect. Yes, I just said that. Why? Because, a man can kill a woman, a woman can kill a man, hell, in most movies today they'res psychopathic four year olds killing people. But how many times in movies do you see a woman raping a man? You don't. Now I'm not saying that taking someone's life is more morally stable than rape, in fact I am not saying that at all, but it's simply less "wrong". Note the quotations.

*I also think, as others have stated, sex scenes are much more realistic than murder scenes... (how many times do you hear irl of a saw act occuring?) But rape DOES happen. So, it's more... scary. Seriously. Not to mention sex itself is dramatic to watch in media.

I know I'm gonna get a million "SEXIST! YOU'RE CALLING MEN RAPISTS!" Responses. However, that's not what I'm trying to point out here
