um, I've has some incredibly challenging music in marching band....and if you think the physical exertion put forth in marching band is equal to that of eating......honestly you obviously have NO knowledge of how this stuff works, and have real business discussing it like this.

BandNerdsRHot, you had to do 4 to 5 backwards eek eek if had ever been asked to even attempt that, i woulda beat the director down with my horn eek

Our 4 to 5 usually involved 2 blocks turned facing each other, and "running" at each other, and forming one block, or passing threw each other(while praying we dont collide) we almost did one show, as a couple lines hit the wrong spots 1 or 2 sets before the 4 to 5, how we managed to correct it just in time i still dont understand lol

So...since I was told that if i considered marching band a sport to post about it the the sport forum..i am. Marching Band IS A SPORT! And if you swear that its not..take a look at cheerleading. Music is involved...steps and sets are judged...the only difference is people in the band dont run around in skimpy skirts that show half of thier butts! I bet if they did...people would be more than glad to call it a sport.

This is a marching band thread. If you have come to bash people and swear that its not a sport...dont waste your time. We really dont care...

u dumb blonde, all u do is move ur F**KING fingers and march

Lol. What a b***h. XD Marching band is probably the hardest sport you could ever be in. At rookie camp it was over 100 degrees every day and the third day I passed out. D: Of course real band camp the next week was even tougher...we practiced 15 hours a day. 2 weeks of band camp=84 hours. Every week of the marching band semester we had practice 3 times a week after school. It was 3 hours a day...we also had practice during school...that was 1 1/2 hours every day. Then Fridays were games which we were there for a minimum of 5 hours. On average we spent 21 1/2 hours marching every week. We had plenty of competitions so we had weekend practices too. It SUCKED. XD The football team however practiced every day...even Sundays. I feel bad for them. O.o They have to practice the whole year too...even after football season. We have an amazing marching band and football team. We have tons of trophies. The football team has been #1 in the state for the past 3 YEARS. We're so amazing. XDDD

Saddest game ever, much?

Great graphics though.

Marching Band IS a sport!!! Just b/c we dont throw a ball, or put on a cheerleading uniform and cheer doesn't mean its not a sport. Theres a lot more hard work put in2 marching band than a lot of people think. Theres a lot of practice, memorization, and dedication involved......the same goes for any other sport!!! MARCHING BAND IS A SPORT!!!!

Uh what....are you shitting me? Marching band, while it may be a sport is VERY VERY far from being hard. Oh boo hoo you have to march around a field for 8 hours in uncomfortable clothes? Do you have to do 100 suicides on a basketball court? Do you have to run football plays 25-50 times in a 4 hour time limit? No, don't b***h because you don't really have room to. It may be a sport, but its not THAT harcore. Dont flatter yourselves.

Marching Band isn't really a sport, sorry. I was in it and I was on the drumline. Yeah you have to be fit and do drills and stuff for marching... Yes it's hard (I did say I was on drumline. I'm small 5'2) Doing a show is performing. Actors/Actress work just as hard. Good cheerleaders work just as hard. Dancers work just as hard. Just because you have to do drills doesn't make it a sport. Marching down a damn street playing anything or twirling a flag isn't a sport. (I also did baton when I was younger). Every fall sport goes through 100 degree days of practice. ( At least in band you have sectionals to go cool off, if you have that option where ever your band camp is located. (Drumline just had a damn tree.) Remember anything you do should be hard,, because you want to be your best. I know my marching band worked our asses off and never won a competition (only if we were the only ones in our class.) Plenty of times different directors told us we should have won. (The judges didn't like our style)

Competition marching band would be considered under and entertainment sport at anything. Since your are competiting (sport). I would list competitive cheerleading under entertainment sport...

i agree with everything this guy said. Like cheerleading, marching bandis a hobby in my opinion. You guys don't do half the physical activity that real sports do.Try doing practice for an actual sport then you will see the difference.

i think what The Westies said was abit harsh but i agree mostly with Rotality... i think you guys are underestimating the level of endurance and stamina required when playing a real sport i respect your guys opinions, but im sorry to say its not a sport, its not taxing in the same way sorry guys

It is a sport and you sweat alot too!!!

eh, try not to assume please.

I've done baseball, football, wrestling, and spent most my life growing up bike riding.

and then there was band.

all of these had there own set of physical challenges, simply put, you guys are vastly underestimating what it takes to be in a good marching band, let alone a great one.

All I can say is marching band IS a sport.

To those who say it's "easy" marching on the field - it's a lot more complicated than that. Every marcher has to be on the same step, on the same beat, and stay in line. You have to be constantly alert around you and, if you mess up, the rest of the band messes up. Therefore, it's a team effort to be in the marching band, so I don't see how "easy" it is.

To those who think playing an instrument is easy - you are soooo far from being wrong. It takes a lot of skill to be able to move your lips, press "buttons," march, and be able to maintain a good, solid sound. It also takes a lot of skill to be moving and still keep that sound. You honestly have no idea how hard it is to do that until you try it.

To those who say marching band doesn't have any physical needs - how on earth could you say that? You do realize that every minute being on the field requires each marcher to multi-task, playing their instrument, marching, staying in a line, and going to each position on the field, while looking at the field commander. I'd like to see you do that. We also have to do exercises, like jumping jacks, and we do get punished by having to run laps. Marching band also requires a lot of lung and muscle power, due to having to play for hours-on-end and having to hold up an instrument for that long. Here's something you can try: hold your arms up and see if you can last several hours like that. You'll see how hard that is.

To those who say marching band isn't competitive like football - it's very competitive. Have you ever heard of marching band competitions? Sure, you might be rolling your eyes and saying, "That's not against another team," but it IS against another team. You do realize that, even though we aren't in a *competitive* state in competitions, we DO have rivals. We are trying to out-play our rival schools and try to be on top of the competition and move on to quarter or state finals. So, don't tell me marching band isn't competitive.

To those who are just saying, despite what I just said, marching band still isn't a sport - all I can say is you are ignorant, because it takes a lot of work pulling off a show. Sure, it doesn't involve a ball, but it takes a lot of team effort and participation, and if one person messes up, everyone messes up. Go see a marching band practice and you'll see how hard and strict it is to pull it off. Just because we don't throw a ball doesn't mean it's not a sport.
