All I can say is marching band IS a sport.
To those who say it's "easy" marching on the field - it's a lot more complicated than that. Every marcher has to be on the same step, on the same beat, and stay in line. You have to be constantly alert around you and, if you mess up, the rest of the band messes up. Therefore, it's a team effort to be in the marching band, so I don't see how "easy" it is.
To those who think playing an instrument is easy - you are soooo far from being wrong. It takes a lot of skill to be able to move your lips, press "buttons," march, and be able to maintain a good, solid sound. It also takes a lot of skill to be moving and still keep that sound. You honestly have no idea how hard it is to do that until you try it.
To those who say marching band doesn't have any physical needs - how on earth could you say that? You do realize that every minute being on the field requires each marcher to multi-task, playing their instrument, marching, staying in a line, and going to each position on the field, while looking at the field commander. I'd like to see you do that. We also have to do exercises, like jumping jacks, and we do get punished by having to run laps. Marching band also requires a lot of lung and muscle power, due to having to play for hours-on-end and having to hold up an instrument for that long. Here's something you can try: hold your arms up and see if you can last several hours like that. You'll see how hard that is.
To those who say marching band isn't competitive like football - it's very competitive. Have you ever heard of marching band competitions? Sure, you might be rolling your eyes and saying, "That's not against another team," but it IS against another team. You do realize that, even though we aren't in a *competitive* state in competitions, we DO have rivals. We are trying to out-play our rival schools and try to be on top of the competition and move on to quarter or state finals. So, don't tell me marching band isn't competitive.
To those who are just saying, despite what I just said, marching band still isn't a sport - all I can say is you are ignorant, because it takes a lot of work pulling off a show. Sure, it doesn't involve a ball, but it takes a lot of team effort and participation, and if one person messes up, everyone messes up. Go see a marching band practice and you'll see how hard and strict it is to pull it off. Just because we don't throw a ball doesn't mean it's not a sport.
