I'll just throw this in. Marching band is a sport. We have a minor league and a major league, just like most sports. The minor league? High school/college marching bands. The major league? DCI. The off-season training? WGI. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Before I say my thing let me just state that I do not hate the activity of band and all forms of it and those who do it. I know and respect all that you go through in order to do be good at what you do.

There is a lot of work that goes into a marching band/colour guard, etc, etc, but even with all the practise and training that goes into it, it is NOT a sport. All it is playing something for a long period of time and do some fancy s**t with it. I know people who do this, and have for a very long time, and none of them say it's a sport, not a single one. I know full well what they go through and some of it seems like over kill and unnessesary. If training feels like the military then it's not a sport.

I do not believe that a marching band would preform in lightning, unless of course their program doesn't give a s**t about the band's safey. If marching band was a sport you wouldn't, and a lot of things used in band are things you do not want out in a thunder storm. That's just stupid. Play in the pouring rain, in the snow, 30-40k winds, do that all you want, other sports do that too.

It does qualify more of a sport than poker, but at the end of the day it's just playing musical instrument
but spiced up a bit.

"We are only truely serious when the audience is silent and all you can hear is the echoing of the snair as we march onto the field. People at competitons respect us and are silent when a band is on the field, but at football games people could give a crap. I hear them talking and I see them running to eat their food so they can come back during 3rd quarter."

If you truely believe it's a sport and you believe this then you need a wake up call. Be truely serious each and every you apply your craft. If that's the mentality you have and I was your coach/ or what ever they call band team head people, you'd be sitting. Whether those at football games care or not, you play and by god your put your heart to it, give 110% (even though technically one can only gieve 100%), each and every time. Give it the same effort whether it be the finals of a major band comp or just a pre-season football game, either you have the mentality and give it your all 100% of the time or don't bother. In hockey, when ever I play, if I feel that I'm not up giving it all I give my spot to someone who will. I've even played with a variation of strep throat and was advised not to play and part of me wished I stayed home that day, it was a regular season game but it wouldn't have effected our spot in the standings at the time, but I gave all I had, all of us did and none of us held back at all. If you really think it's a sport then shape up and take every time out just as serious as the last, or don't bother getting out of bed.

I tried to be normal once..I didn't like it very much.

Well, Marching Band is more of a musical thing... like orchestra, except you march...

Parade day floats aren't considered sports...

And yes, I consider cheerleading a sport because it is a lot like gymnastics... and please, you don't have to put down a sport just to make your point... although I don't cheerlead...

Amongst the unwashed masses, there is a persistent epidemic of lexical ignorance. Throughout the English-speaking world, millions of innocent people go about their daily lives without the slightest notion of the true nature of sport; they, in their generous but ignorant way, bless many an activity with the title of "sport," but they, sadly, are often mistaken. However, there is hope for you, O neophytes; I am here to enlighten you.

Thus, I present the Rigorous Definition of a Sport:

A sport is any activity in which all of the following take place:

1. An individual playing session is held between exactly two opposing players or teams.
2. The successful completion of a playing session results in a win for one player or team and a loss for the other or a tie between the two players or teams.
3. An integer score is assigned to each team corresponding directly to the number of times certain predetermined actions are performed by that team. The only judgment by any official regarding the score is whether these actions were performed. The winner of the playing session is determined by the final score.
4. The players regularly engage in rapid, self-propelled locomotion. Examples include, but are not limited to, running, skating, and swimming.
5. The duration of the game is limited either by time or by the completion of a preselected number of play units, the scope of which is determined by the completion of certain events during play.
6. The objective of the activity does not at any time directly involve physically harming an opponent.
7. The status of a solid inanimate object, movable by the force of one player, is of central importance when play is active. Furthermore, when play is active, the object is not physically attached to any player; and it is not rendered motionless, held, or contained by any player for an extended period of time.
8. No live animals, other than humans, are used.

* Basketball
* Cricket
* Football
* Handball
* Hockey
* Jai alai
* Lacrosse

cheereading and band are not sports

they are sheerly for entertainment

If you think about it, stuff like baseball and football are sheerly for entertainment too. They're called "spectator sports"

I go on self-motivated field trips.

Weakness is only ignorance in disguse.

Learning more about a topic or event that influences one's way of life is never a "weakness."

Yes Marching Band IS A SPORT! It's hard work. EVERYONE has to be in synch, and you have to play complex music and actually make it sound good. It takes A LOT of energy and disciplin to do Marching Band and it is about time we get some credit for all of the hard work we do!

Marching band is definatley a sport. We run around the field playing hard music, having to stay in step and on time. Its work. So i agree marching band is a sport! mrgreen

They're both sports really. Marching band requires much more work than Football even. I do have to disagree with you though, on your view of cheerleading. The schools who let their girls run around with over half of their spankies showing, are the kind who just want them there for show. Some schools, like mine, actually send the cheerleaders to competitions.

However, I will admit that Middle School cheerleading isn't really a sport. I suppose they are just there for..show and to encourage people in sports. Mainly the guys.. >.> But oh well.

Still, marching band is most definatly a sport..it just doesn't require a physical. ^.^
But I guarantee that we people in marching band sweat and work much harder than pretty much any other sport. : D

So are there any topics about marching band in general or are all of them about weather or not it's a sport? I honestly don't care if people don't consider marching a sport. Two of my friends fought about this awhile ago and I saw why each defended their side. Marching requires physical and mental effort but at the same time (at least in our case) it's not as demanding as a lot of sports (soccer was the sport it was being compared to).

well, colorguard is a part of marching band, and they do dance, and, sometimes, gymnastics along with the flag, sabre, rifle, ect. and i don't see how you could possibly compare marching band with parade day floats. and i also consider cheerleading a sport, as long as it's, like, actual cheerleading, not wannabee cheerleaders
