Bug Reports & Tech Support

Like the Questions & Assistance Forum, the Bug Reports and Tech Support forum is intended to be a place for users to get information or help. However, general questions about the site are inappropriate here. This forum is only for gaining and giving information when a user is unable to get something on the site to work properly for them.

In This Thread
  • Post 1 - Rules & Guidelines
  • Post 2 - Is This a Glitch?
  • Post 3 - Good Bug Reporting/Information Gathering
  • Post 4 - A few notes on Alpha Testing
  • Post 5 - Linklist! (Glitch Reporting threads and 'New Feature' threads)

Rules & Guidelines

The Basics:
  • Flaming.
Calling other users "stupid," "slow," "retarded," or "moronic" doesn't help any situation. We're supposed to be helping each other. Even if they are "stupid" calling them that doesn't do any good. It only makes you look "stupid." It can also get you a warning.

  • Spamming.
Entering threads to say "hi" or "wow thats cool" isn't appropriate (and it's not fun for everyone else). If you're new to Gaia and want to give random hellos, please use the Welcome to Gaia Forum, or Chatterbox Forum. If you are looking for a place to make new friends, check out the Friends Chat forum.

  • Bumping.
Threads on the first page do not require bumping, and this forum can move more slowly than others. Please only bump if your question or request for assistance has gone unanswered and fallen off the first page of the forum. Excessive bumps may be deleted.

For those asking for assistance:
  • Check existing topics first!
Most glitches and bugs affect more than a single user. Try to look over at least the threads on the first page of the forum to see if someone else is experiencing the same difficulty as you before you create a new topic.

  • Give your topics descriptive subjects!
If you put the error message, or a brief description of your problem as your subject for the thread, it will be a lot easier for other users having the same problem to find your thread. This is important, since gathering information from several users experiencing the same difficulty can often help identify and solve glitches much faster.

  • Clothing & Layering Glitches go in a Different Subforum!
If your error is a layering issue with items displaying in an odd manner when equipped, then you need to go to the Avatar System 2.0 Q&F subforum.

For those offering assistance:
  • Report bad threads!
Members will post threads that don't belong in this subforum or threads that should be removed due to being inappropriate. It's better to not post in these threads. Report them to an online moderator! Let us explain why the thread should be moved. smile

  • If you're trying to help, be helpful!
If you're just going to say "I have no idea," or "Don't know! That's weird!", it's better to not post and let someone post who does have an idea or know and recognize the problem. If you have information you think may be of use but you're not certain it's correct, it's also nice to let us know that you're not certain of the information.

  • Enforcing Rules!
If a user breaks a rule, you can politely inform them of their mistake, but please do not make it the sole purpose of your post, and please make it polite. Getting into a fight with someone solves nothing and may only result in you breaking the rules as well. Reporting the violation is always the best option.

  • Repeats are a fact of life.
It's inevitable that when a glitch is widespread, there will be repetitive threads from various users about that glitch.

Is This a Glitch?

Major known glitches are usually listed in the Gaia Problems thread in the main Q&A forum. A more comprehensive list of known glitches is in the Gaia Glitches & Bugs List here in this forum. Check those threads for known issues that are not yet fixed.

Here we'll list some common things that you might think are glitches.... but really aren't.

"Error Message"
"This feature is temporarily disabled"

If you see a message that says something is disabled, this is not a glitch. It simply means that the feature is currently unavailable, most likely because it is being either updated or fixed. When you get a message like this, just wait. The feature will be re-enabled eventually. 3nodding

"Error Message"
"........PM MsTransaction......."

If you get an error message in the marketplace that tells you to PM MsTransaction, this message is not a glitch. The MsTransaction account is owned by one of Gaia's developers and is used for receiving reports of marketplace errors.

Good Bug Reporting/Information Gathering

The better the information you provide when reporting your difficulty, the more likely someone is to be able to help you with it. If it's a glitch in Gaia that needs fixed, more information can really help identify and solve a problem a lot faster as well. So here's a few tips...

  • Read this thread:
READ ME: How to Report a Bug!

  • Be SPECIFIC
Include the exact error message you are getting in your report. Describe what you do immediately before the error happens. If there is no error message, say that too. Tell us how you produced the error so that someone else can attempt to duplicate it to find out more information about it. Screenshots can also be helpful. 3nodding

  • If it's intermittent, check the Server ID's
Sometimes if you're getting an error that only comes up once in a while, it's a single server that has the faulty code, which is why the error only comes up intermittently. Right-click on the page and choose 'view source', then do a search for 'Gaia Server' to get the Gaia Server ID on the page where the error occurs.

A few notes on Alpha Testing

  • Minor bugs (those which do not involve major loss of items/gold or completely block features for a majority of the users on the site), may take a while to fix. 'A while' being anywhere from weeks to months.

  • There can be no guarantees that you will get back items or gold that may have been lost through a glitch. Sometimes users do get things back, yes. Often they don't. Staff will frequently attempt to restore things when major losses occur, but there are never any guarantees.

"TOS"
The Service is provided "As Is" and GAIA Online makes no warranties - expressed or implied - of any kind. You use the Service at your own risk. Furthermore, it should be noted, that GAIA Online assumes no responsibility for the accidental or circumstantial loss of inventory items, Gold, Avatars, lost communications, missed events or loss of personalization of a User's account for ANY reason.

  • If you are wondering why a known glitch has been around for a while and not fixed yet, here are the three most likely possibilities:

"Why does this take so long to get fixed?"
The glitch is low priority
This means quite simply that no developer has had time to fix it yet because there have been higher priority issues taking up their time.

The cause has not yet been identified
It's easy to say what a glitch does, and sometimes much harder to figure out why or what is causing it to do that. Some glitches, like the infamous Gold Glitch that hung around from July-Oct in 2004, are around so long because of the difficulty in pinpointing the cause of the glitch.

The fix is waiting on backend changes to the site code
For instance, when the PM system was re-written, glitches involving the PM system prior to the re-write were not fixed.... because it would have been a waste of time to fix something that was shortly not going to be in use anymore. In other cases, the fix that is chosen requires unseen changes to the site to be made first to make the fix possible.
